My credo
Doing things wrong, until I get it right.
So my daughter is 16 now, and she'll be driving more and more. At the moment we have a family SUV that the wife drives and I daily an 08 Corolla. Besides my lil' D21 project, that's all we have for Transportation. I've been thinking of getting a used car that's nicer than the "rolla. I came across a few Sport Tracs. Even found a nice one with the Adrenalin package, in my price range and within 300 miles of me. Totally worth it in my opinion. I just have to convince the wife this is a good idea. I'll probably have to get rid of my V8RangerProject and donor Explorer though. Still worth it in my book, since the Adrenalin Sport T4ac is basically my dream truck built from the factory. But with a new mortgage and a $500 car payment, it might be hard to convince a bank or CU to loan me the money. I'm going to try to get pre-approved for a certain amount and then go from there.

Any advice is welcomed, and I guess your opinions also matter, a little.

What year is it?

I think the Adrenalin package started in 2005, last year of first generation

And which engine if 2006 and up?

Assume an automatic, with how many miles?

i don't know what the adrenalin package is but it sure sounds cool. i hope you get it

Adrenalin Package = blacked out head lights, black grill, 20" rims/tires, vented front fenders, running boards are more like a ground effects kit than the regular running boards.

There is a V8 one on the same site, but almost 200K miles @ $7k
@RonD How does the 4.6 V8 hold up after 200K miles?

I owned two and am still active on the boards.
Price looks a little high but what isn’t these days? Last year of production and an Adrenalin besides.
Trannys are a weak spot but it may have been rebuilt by now. Look for evidence of that.
The V6 can have timing chain issues if the oil wasn’t changed regularly.
The V8 suffers from cracked exhaust manifolds which isn’t a cheap fix either.
Check the lower rear cab corners for rust. It comes from the third brake light leaking.
Otherwise they are pretty bulletproof and your daughter will have something that no one else does. Just change all the fluids and filters and drive it.

I used to have an '08 XLT. Loved it more than any other car I've ever owned. always liked the way the Adrenaline's looked. I would settle for a non Adrenaline one, but that one is clean and in my price range.
I'll probably spend the next few months searching and looking for something. Definatley not getting anything in the immediate future.

My last one was a '08 XLT that I got new. Had it for 13 years and 212,000 miles, traded it on the Ranger when it blew a head gasket. Body and interior were still mint. Great vehicle. My kids are grown and gone and I no longer need a full back seat.

I need more info on the donor Explorer, LOL.
Seriously though, if you do decide to get rid of it, I might be interested.

I know of a 2008 Sport Trac 4.6 2wd that needs work and is pretty well ragged out if you're interested.

I don't want anything that "needs work". I'm looking for a dependable ride to share with a new Driver.
The Explorer is a 2000 Eddie Bauer Explorer. No rear end, interior, dash, steering wheel/column, console or anything like that. Its stripped/gutted. What it DOES have is the pedals, complete wiring harness', motor, transmission, TC, and most of the front end parts. Pass. Side cv axle and hub was removed before I got it.

Throw me a decent number and you can have the Donor and the Ranger. Clean title on the Ranger. It's a basic 3.0L 2001 Edge. (needs a grill)

I made bob winch his junk on the trailer.....and we were gonna have to just figure it out.

no wheels.....tires....suspension....engine....trans ....seats.....hell...not even a steering wheel...

it did have glass though.....and doors even.... with working openey handles...and window up n downers I splurged a little with the doors....mostly for my benefit there....

the other 4 kids say he has it easy.....

Zoie...the youngest daughter drove my ranger the most....she didnt even get a license till she was 21.....straight outlaw....in my ranger.

Mady had the bronco.....and then an even bigger pos grand am....and the escort when necessary...once she went into the air force she got a new fusion....

Emily had a 400k beat to shit pos chevy 2wd rc wt with a 4.3....I was horrified about that.....but she run the wheels off of it....and it got her going in life...

the oldest....Sarah had the jeep cher o car.....then ma give her the Kia Rhondo when she graduated....she was the only one that had a good car....

its scary..... especially for your insurance agent.... tough decision.

of course....

best bet...
get a dodge stratus.

Yuh what?

Hated mine, turning radius of school bus. Not quite as fast. Had that Mitsubishi four banger. 2 door with a spoiler, and 6 CD changer, real poonany wagon.

Have a friend that loves them. Went through three of them before he couldn’t find another one and bought a Taurus. still has the Taurus.

Did you ever have any trouble in those 200K miles? motor or transmission?

Rebuilt trans at 132k but it's a known weak spot.
Ran like new until it blew a head gasket at 212k but that is not a common problem.
Several front wheel bearings, all but the last two covered on extended warranty although I suspect it was due to improper installation by the dealer tightening the hub nut with an impact wrench instead of torqueing to the proper spec. The last two were changed at a different dealer when I was traveling out of state and I never had a problem for the last 60,000 miles I owned it.
Cracked radiator tank and thermostat housing, a known problem with the 4.0, can be minimized by swapping to a 16 lb radiator cap for a 2000 Mustang V6. Aluminum thermostat housings are available, I never bothered.
Rust in the lower rear cab corners, actually comes from the third brake light leaking, water runs down around the rear window inside the cab and lays in the corners, causing rust. Doesn't happen in all of them and a competent old-school body shop should be able to make a patch. I just left the holes so the water could run out, wasn't visible from the outside.
Overall they're fairly bulletproof. Just change the plugs, filters, and ALL the fluids, and drive it.
It turned 200k on the way to Carlisle.
