Thinking of getting a new Ranger

There's a few new Rangers at work. I like parking my old ranger next to them. The owners seem happy with them. One friend has had his awhile now and I think only had one problem that warranty fixed. I forget what exactly, but do remember it was something simple yet complicated, and the truck was at the dealer for a few days. I think that's the biggest caveat with newer trucks/vehicles in general. Not much can be diagnosed/repaired by the shadetree home mechanic.

The shade tree home mechanic needs to be and in many cases is evolving. It can be done. It just isn't as easy as it once was.

True I think it evolves into narrowing to a niche and requiring special tools. Diagnosis and getting to the dang part is a lot more challenging too. Step 1 for an oil change: remove engine and/or cab. Or like dealing with variable timing cam synchros? No thanks. Lol I grew up working on older Ford vehicles and Yamaha Motorcycles, and Hondas of both. I will stick to those. I am sick buying tools lol.
I'd be curious to work on an EV, no engine/trans etc. to worry about. Probably just need a computer, maybe a screwdriver and 10mm to pop off covers and remove terminals to swap circuit boards and whatnot. Its like electrical work now lol mind those high voltage cables.

those electric cars will probably need armatures rewound after a while. thats not something we can do at home. i used to have to pull the motors on the golf carts and take the armature to get redone when they got worn excessively back when i was a golf cart mechanic at the local place.

I believe you are referring to DC motors on older machines. The commutators would get worn and dirty, brushes worn out, causing heat that damaged the insulation on the armature.

I'm pretty sure these are using 3 phase AC motors, possibly with permanent magnet rotors = no commuters, no brushes, no armature windings. Very different motor technology.

But motors will still go bad eventually. It will most likely be a "swap out the whole motor" scenario.

Agreed. an old/worn motor would just get swapped, just like batteries. Maybe they could get sent out to get refurbished or something. ICE cars are like this too. We dont rebuild alternators, just swap em. Dealerships don't rebuild transmissions, especially under warranty. When in doubt, swap it out.
