I'm a huge Subaru fan. If I was looking to get a new car I'd get the Impreza hatch.
I like Subaru's(esp the STI WRX), Hondas, and Toyotas. I like car companies that make their cars easily serviceable.
Chrysler/Dodge vehicles have been known for years to have reliability and quality control problems, and this goes back all the way to the 80's, so this isn't something "recent" (Under Daimler or fiat or WHATEVER) .
I have a friend that owned a 2002 Dodge Dakota, he had numerous problems with his truck. For some reason his V8 was burning tons of oil at 70,000 miles, he never drove it hard, and didn't understand why his fuel mileage was so bad.
He eventually got it rebuilt from a piston issue, 3 bad rocker's, and a damaged crankshaft! At only 70k? Even after the rebuild, the truck didn't run any better, plus his MPG's were still on the low side, when it never was like that before.
The interior fit in finish was terrible, all Chrysler/Dodge vehicles from what I notice and remember have terrible interiors that are of low quality. The plastic's are toy like, and very cheap. I can go on and on.
For American cars, I usually trust Toyota, and Ford. Ford has gotten much better over the years. Chrysler has improved, but not to the extent that I could trust them with my hard earned cash.
All new cars in general from Japanese to American cars (European cars still have better quality interiors), especially mid level priced cars, to an extent have cheapish interiors compared to cars from years ago. I recently rented a 2011 Honda Accord, and the interior quality was terrible compared to my old 94 Honda Accord. There is so much cheap plastic that creaks in that car, it's just unbelievable. The road noise was another major issue, the tire noise was extremely loud, and overall the car didn't have that "quality feel" of older Honda's. Flimsy armrest, cheap feeling shifter, vibrating engine with only 23,000 miles, plastic everywhere door panels, flimsy tin can metal trunk lid. You can tell Honda cost cutted the Accord, and so far I don't think Honda is as great as they once were.
I believe all car companies have their up years, and down years, Honda and Toyota are going through this now. While the brands that were considered crap for years like Hyundai and Kia are finally improving ,and in some cases are much better built cars than the big mighty Japanese brands.
