thinking about a 98 cobra

ill def check up on insurance first then. I figured it would run a little high, but 1000 a year aint bad in my eyes. I may wait a little while till i get a little more funds so I wont be broke if I buy it.

i'm not sure what all factors go into deciding the price of your insurance premium but, i'm 20 have 2 cars and definately not a clean driving record. and i pay 100 a month (mustang-full ranger-liability)

Ive kinda been kept in the dark about my insurance since ive had a license. My dad will sometimes ask for money to pay it, but sometimes he wont. Im still under his name I think so Im not even sure what my cost is. I have two vehicles, truck and car, not sure what extent of insurance though either. Ill have to find out!

not sure what part of washington you live in but that seems a little cheap for a 20 y/o with a mustang. I pay that for liability for chevy and the minivan.

when I lived in Spokane I paid $250 a month for full coverage on the SRT-4 and the Expedition with liability on the explorer. At the time I was 27 and married with 2 kids.

all 3 I owned outright, no payments.

Show me the actual car, I'll see if anyone in the CT mustang club knows any history on it.

Well, I am glad I did, because I found out just today that it is not the head gasket, it is a cracked head. :icon_surprised::pissedoff::temper:

I would have felt like total s??t if I would have sold it to somebody & told them it was a head gasket. Needless to say, I am looking at thousands of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! I will never be able to afford to fix it, so now I am stuck with a car that I can never fix & probably can never sell......

Don't mean to thread jack, but car-part dot com is your friend.

I just did a search for a Cobra head in the southeast and they run about $400.

There's one in Nashville but no price listed for it.

To the OP, this is currently a buyer's market on near anything. Decide what you'd pay and offer that in cash. If they don't take it, walk away. If it's been there for a year they'll probably call you back to accept your offer before you get home.

I'd personally look into the fox body over the sn95.

the cobra looks pretty nice i would get a different hood if i bought it but the yellow and black looks good

thats the stock hood, I think its looks pretty cool. Makes it look like a snake kinda.

I just found this one, this is exactly what I been looking for down to year and body style. Its about 3 hours away so hopefully he can meet me a little closer.

I originally wanted fox, but there wasnt much out there so I started looking at newer ones. Thats how I came across the cobra.

98 Cobra is DOHC, 4 valves per cyl, 305 hp. It is a sweet car & yes things get expensive. I have a hard time picturing Bullitt wheels on one though. :icon_confused:

I have owned mine for 8 yrs, only drove it on weekends & kept it in the garage. Been parked for over 2 yrs because I thought it had a bad head gasket, & even advertised it for sale recently, with the head gasket problem stated in the listing. I changed my mind & decided to fix it & sell it. Well, I am glad I did, because I found out just today that it is not the head gasket, it is a cracked head. :icon_surprised::pissedoff::temper:

Anyway, the 98 Cobra is a sweet car overall. I loved mine for the roughly 6 yrs I got to enjoy it. Just be prepared to spend $$ if something goes wrong. Here is a couple of pics of mine, I don't know how to make the pics bigger.

keep an eye on ebay maybe a head will pop up on there. Have you called around to any junkyards?

there is a 98 cobra near me for sale. Its been in the classifieds since last fall. its got 80k and black bullit wheels with the chrome lip. Only thing is its yellow, but I may be able to deal with that. They want just under 9k for it, im hoping to offer 7k and walk away with it. Anyone have any experience with the 96-98 cobras? From what I have read they are a great car and well put together.

Awesome car no doubt. All ive ever owned is mustangs...like 7 of them. id love to get my hands on a 98 or 97 cobra. I wouldnt pay 7 though unless is tricked and mint. maybe 6.

Your on crack if you want to get rid of it for that reason...you know that right? There are so many of those heads on ebay and in junkyards. You could have that thing apart and replaced overnight after you get the new/used head. On top of that a cracked head is primetime for more mods. If you dont want it though. give me a ring.

I don't know if it's the price of a replacement head that bothers most people. It's the rediculous amount of work and special tools involved with replacing it.

You say it can be replaced overnight, but the SHOP time is 22 hours for that job.

The most important special tool you can have is CAMLOCKS. They run about 200 for a set from the tool guy. Or if you know a good mechanic you can borrow one like I did for my bro's 92 crown vic (4.2interceptor) I dont know about 4 valves but the cam locks was the only special tools i needed for head gaskets. the valve tools are pretty standard across the board. And theres plenty of advice here to get you through a one or two night head swap.

::EDIT:: the cam locks lock the cam in place so they dont rotate when you remove the timing chain. otherwise you get piston to valve clearance and then you have more of a problem than just a crack, FYI for those who dont know.
