Dang it a simple accident and the insurance totals out my Ranger:bawling: I kept it looking like new, in fact the Body shop couldn't believe how clean it was.

The bad,
Right front end crunched, needs new bumper, R lights, R fender and some other misc stuff for front end. (The frame was not bent just the right tab area that holds the bumper to the frame. The hood is slightly curled in the very front right corner but can be rolled out no problem).

Left rear door (4 dr model) will need to be replaced and a little bit of work on the driver door.

Slight dent behind L rear wheel and the L tail light lens is cracked. Other than a few other scratches it's ok.

The good.
2000 Ranger XLT 4 DR, 4 ltr V6 4:11 (well maybe not so good on gas) but the interior is like showroom and the rest is like show room condition. Only 74.5K on engine/tranny a real cream puff

The Insurance co offered 8500 and a buy back of 6800 (they'll give me 6800) if I want it back of course it'll have a salvage title. I talked to the body shop yesterday and we went over what stuff I "really" need to make it decent. After that they came back with 4K to fix it back up almost like new. For the insurance quote they had about 7K to fix it.

I'm debating weather to take the $ and go find something else or just have it fixed for 4K and drive it till it dies. I typically keep stuff forever so having a rebuilt title wouldn't be much of an issue because I bought it new and know how it was treated.

Any thoughts? or suggestions?:icon_confused:

Those numbers seem pretty decent, I'd take the $6800 and fix it myself.

taking the $6800 then will give him a salvage title and therefore automatically cut his re-sale value in half.

ask the adjuster to give you the most he will give without "totalling" the truck. it's not totalled until they hand you the check

Sounds like he doesn't plan on selling it.

^^ right, but how many of us actually own a vehicle until the day we die?, and if it has a salvage title the next time someone hits him their adjuster only has to offer half as much to "total" it. not-totalling a vehicle that is 10 or 15-years old or less is usually just a good idea.

You can't do that in most states. You have to write for all damages or no damages. If the Insurance company would do this...there would nothing stopping him from putting in a supplement for additional damages. These arrangements almost always go south. The only way to "finalize" it is to Total Loss it. Also, salvage title doesn't necessarily cuth the ACV in half...it depends on alot of factors. If it was a brand new Mercedes with slavage paper then you would proibably be correct... a 10 or 15 year old car no so much. It also depends on the quality of the repairs.

Take the 8500 and get another Ranger, that gives you a clean title with good resale and possibly a few grand left over to fix it up the way you want it. You will never feel the way you did about your ride before it was wrecked, and the salvage title will kill the resell value. Good to know youre ok as well!

i just did this very move on my truck in november. the damges were far more than the $1500 that they said would total it. so i took $1,000 fixed it myself and it was done. if i had put in for a supplemental they would have totalled it then.

nope the 1 factor that is a given when it comes to auto values is salvage title.
and i have been in the auto industry my entire adult life. i worked as chief car buyer for carsold.com. not to mention i have been service manager of a mitsubishi dealership and also at a used car dealership

all banks look at salvage title as 1/2 value, and insurance companies do as well. not to mention dealerships and individuals who are looking to purchase said vehicles. as do the valuing bodies such as manheim market report, kelly blue book, etc.

this could be true.
a lot of weird noises and vibrations will come, no matter what u replace. trust me, my truck was totaled un the US. seems like abother car t boned the driver side, and i cant keep the damn door to stop rattling. even the glass keeps gettin loose.

I agree, I've always known it to be this way.

My brother bought a BMW M3 which I believe was labeled as salvage when he bought it. The credit union wouldn't loan enough on it, so he had to buy it via signature loan. He restored it and I believe the state changed the status of the title to rebuilt or restored, and then the credit union would do a loan on it. It was quite a process getting the car to that point though. And quite honestly, I never saw it wrecked, and I can't even tell where it was wrecked.

rebuilt restored is just as bad as salvage

Sounds to be about what mine was..only cost me 560$ to fix it correctly (That included new bumper, all new lights, grill, all new bracket mounts for the bumper, and header panel)..i would buy it back, and fix it..

This is what mine looked like after the accident..

You are right..thats why most companies won't do that. It is usually all or nothing. Anything other usually turns into a mess.

This is not correct. There are alot of factors that go into it. I have been in the collision repair business for 25 years and I am currently an Insurance adjuster licensed in 3 states.

allow me to clarify there buddy. you are right there are many variables , but what i said is the only given is salvage title. it always cuts it in half no one of the other "factors" that you are referring to are that common, and predictable, applying to all vehicles non-discriminantly.
