Thermostat jiggle valve 4.0l OHV

Hello All,

I’m doing an intake manifold gasket replacement on this 4.0l OHV 93 ranger. I’ve ordered a mahle intake gasket set. Anyway, the stat thermostat I’ve ordered doesn’t have a built in jiggle valve like the installed stat valve. Should I drill a small hole in my new one, or attempt to shop for a new thermostat with the proper configuration?

It's not that big of a deal either way. It's just to help purge air from the system but many cars dont have it. If it bothers you, drilling a single 1/8" hole will be perfectly safe and effective.

I drill a 1/16 hole in every thermostat that doesn't have a vent and install it at the top to purge air. It doesn't hurt anything and might help. I've seen engine with a port to bleed the air when filling the cooling system, Renault Lecar's and 4 cylinder 80's Taurus' come to mind. It prevents the coolant from puking out the first time the stat opens. This will be the final time you see me say something positive about a Renault.

Good info, thanks guys. I’m going to go ahead a drill that hole and orientate it to the top of the port.
