Thermostat differences

Hey guys I just bought a 2008 Ranger Sport model 2 weeks ago. I noticed that it wouldn't warm up all the way, never more than 1/3rd on the gauge so I ordered a thermostat and both of the temp sensors from rock auto.

So I managed to change the thermostat... but the one I took out has a large disc and extra spring attached to it on the bottom (top in picture). My new one didn't have that and i put it in anyways and it seems to be working just fine though, is the one I pulled out normal?

I was intending to change the sensors, but I found out that the right one (looking into the engine bay from the front of the vehicle) is missing! I read earlier that one sends the temp to the gauges and one sends it to the engine's computer. So if my gauge works what does this mean about my vehicle, there is no check engine light or anything. I also couldn't even see the connector for it but it could have been hiding behind something.

And lastly this is unrelated to the rest but after fixing this, on my way home my shifter suddenly started getting rough. There is a sound like a couple little pieces of loose metal hitting each other by the shifter stick when I put it into a gear. 4th gear is the worst, others have it but not as bad, its hard to get it into gear and makes that sound. It seems like something is broken in there, could this be the shifter bushings? I noticed there is a guide in the tech pages so I'm hoping that's all it is and it's not inside the transmission, it does seem to feel/sound like its just at the base of the shifter.

Thanks for any info.
