I bought a 91 ranger with a V8 in it and swapped it to my 91. I put everything in mine, even the 2.9 computer and wiring. Now the thing wont turn over and the fuel pump wont kick in. My truck was a 4.0L I have no idea what I did wrong. The motor is carbed and I do have a reg. in place to knock the PSI down for the carb. I just need to know how to get it to turn over with the key and make the pump kick in. Any help would be great.

If it were me, I would get rid of that 2.9L computer and mainharness and start over if you're running a carb. Get a electrical vacuum trouble shooting manual from Helm Inc. and have at it. R/LG is hot with key on run and start, R/LB is hot with key on start.

Strip it and run from scratch. I did mine that way and the pain of gutting the old wires saved me a LOT of trouble shooting later.

the 2.9 harness will run the 5.0 efi.....why didn't you just use that? either way i understand. in my v8 swap i am only using the red/light green and red light blue wires coming in through the firewall on the far driver side. everything else is just not being used. i pulled the whole 2.9 harness out.

but that said i think you may have a fuse popped

oh and since yours is carbed, with a return style fuel system just wiring a $10 universal relay to turn your fuel pumps on, just whenever the ignition is switched will work fine. that is how mine is now even with my efi. just use the red/light green wire, which is all throughout the dash too, i have my relay just up under my dash so that i can easily get to it for troublshooting.

then hit that same wire to your coil, and the red/light blue wire should already be run to your starter relay so it should work without any modification. unless you're not using the stock starter relay (aka solenoid) btw the red/light blue wire runs through a lockout switch on the cluth pedal on manuals which i bypassed by (connecting both red/l blue wires that go to the switch together)because they also fail frequently
and on autos the lockout switch goes somewhere for park/neutral (i think its the shifter but it might be down on the selctor arm on the trans itself)

bypass these even just temperarily to diagnose if that is why you aren't starting

Got it running but, the red/blue wire running to the starter solenoid is still dead. Tried bypassing the clutch switch nothing worked might run new wire.

Go to the wrecking yard and find an auto truck and pull the bypass jumper connector that is on the clutch wiring and that should fix your problem. I had to do this on my Ranger as it was a stickshift and I put in a 4R70W automatic.

yeah, thats what i do alot too.

its a good time to run a custom switch though...

just cant hop in my rig and turn the key and go:icon_rofl:

actually most people cant hop in my rig....and if they were trying to steal it....probably get out and run....fear of the wiring:icon_rofl:

bad ignition switches are not that un-common

mine was the same way. I finaly dropped the steering colum and tied into the start wire at the switch.
