I've seen a police F-250 driving around town around here... It's not local, but I never have time to read what town it's from... I thought that was a little overkill... Don't see why the sheriff needs that big of a truck... Our county has the most random patrol vehicles... Crown Vics, Impalas, Explorers, Expeditions, Trailblazers, Chargers, and Chevy 1/2T trucks... I've seen at least one of each...

Funny you mention that. I've seen some unmarked Tahoes around here with Cragar Soft 8's on them. They're getting sneakier too. A lot more unmarked cars than there used to be.

i noticed that too they would be better off if they put chrome rims on it the cragers or any black steel rims really, on a tahoe make it look coppy if that makes any sense. i just stay away from vics impalas chargers lol. they start driving lifted rangers im screwed. " uh sgt theres an idiot kid doing 85 in a 55 waving at us like crazy from another ranger...do we arrest him..uh yeah officer pick him up.." lol

Theres a cop down by work with an 7.3L Excursion.

One of the local cops here also has a Newer style Expedition.

Most run Vics, Chargers, or Impalas though. I even seen the hillsdale county sheriff "supervisor" crusiing around in one of the old Caprice cops cars.

but my CV could run down the interstate all day at 100+ and never break a sweat.
i second that, i had mine up to 130 a few times, the night they released the xbox 360s i did 100+ the entire way from woodbury to cambridge (60+ miles) but we got there in time to get the last two xbox 360s. :yahoo:

my mom still drives my old one about 70 miles a day from work and back and hasnt had the oil changed or needed any work other than a tire or 2 in almost 5 years. the odometer stopped at 72k long before i got it but it has to have 300k+ by now, best 400$ car i ever bought. The tranny slips when trying to mash it going around a turn but still drives very solid. Shes about to trade it in twards a new fusion with the cash for clunker thing.

Extended idling probably doesn't hurt the newer SOHC engines as much. Older cop cars would go through cam and valvetrain parts from idling a lot where the oil pressure is lower.
At least where I live the state police cars are maintained pretty well, local cop cars not so much because towns just don't have the money.
The local cops I know have told me they don't get more than a year and a half out of transmissions in any of them from a lot of slow in-town driving where it shifts a lot. The engines run forever though.
My local police have a few Crown Vics plus one Expedition.

My dad works for the Sherrif's office and he HAS to get his truck cleaned up (inside and out) once a week... Of course all that means is he has to get the garbage out of the inside and drive it to the workhouse for the inmates to wash it... The county patrol cars have much better care taken of them than the city cars...

So... should I tell him to go for it or not? It's an 02 just like that one, with higher miles (145k) and for 2,800.

He's got a kid on the way, is why he's looking for a fourdoor. Otherwise he'd have to put a carseat in his 03 Ram, 3rd gen Ranger, 2nd Gen Ranger, Trans Am, or Civic coupe. All of which either don't have room or the easy access rear doors. Plus it would be just plain funny to see a guy that just got out of jail recently driving an ex police car. :icon_thumby:

I would.

Think bout it....what kind of car are you going to get that can match the performance, safety, and reliabilty of a crown vic...in an 02 model year...for 2800 bucks?

The state police here have started to use the Dodge Magmum for their ability to carry all the gear. Same goes for the CV, lots of trunk room for all the electronics they have to have anymore. Guy I used to work for always gets a 2-3 year look ahead on what the CV is going to look like, works for a place that designs all the brackets and stuff to make it all fit. Best buddies son is a master tech doing the work on the town police cars (Rockford, IL), says because of the downturn, they have to maintain the cars for 200K miles, can't afford to buy new ones. Think he did say that the trans were the problem area.

find out when the trans has been replaced, if it was recent then yes, if it has not even been replaced then 2,800 is waaaaay too much. you can go to a police auction and get one for 1,500 with a recently replaced trans and in great running order

He bought it. Said it drives great and shifts well, just needs tires since the four on it are missmatched.

Currently his plans are to re-tint the windows, put a bullbar on (the owner kept it, but dropped 300 bucks) and install a system in the truck. He must have alot of room to work with, because he's putting a 15 in the trunk. He's also thinking about rebuilding the rear seat so that the bottom lifts up and he has a firearm storage area underneith. Then in 6 months or so.. he'll be installing a carseat which is why he's getting this and turning his Ranger into a truggy. I keep telling him to join TRS but he's too lazy to use his computer on a dial up connection. Occasionally he's on RPS but not much. Right now he has two Rangers (1989 4x4 V8, and a 2001+ truck), 1982 Subaru Brat, 1990 Subaru Justy, 1988 Dodge Dakota (I think I posted about racing that before, haha) and he kind of has a 1988 Ram 350 but it's technically still in his fathers name until he gets out of the hospital and signs it over. He was in an accident in the truck with a fully loaded water tank, the welds broke on the tank and it flew forward crushing the cab and pinning him against the dash to the right of the steering wheel. If he was wearing a seatbelt, he'd be dead. This wasn't a small tank, this was one of those that are the size of a ranger bed. He's also got a 1979 or 78 Trans Am project car that he's been building since he was 13 or 14 as a drag car. It's sweet as hell to ride in, but not street legal. The only vehicles he has that can pass inspection are the 1989 Ranger, Dakota, and the Brat. He only has the Brat on the road. Oh, and theres a 1996+ civic at his house, not sure if it's his or his girlfriends but I know he makes the payments on it. The newer Ranger was a roll over that he got cheap and is yet to fix up and sell. He has too many vehicles and his mother keeps telling him to get rid of some of them, but he just took them all up to his cabin where he's living at on his parents property. I think he should at least get rid of the dodges. The 350 has bad memories and the Dakota doesn't get used anymore. His Justy is built like a smashed tin can now so it's not worth anything. It's body is bent to the shape of it's roll cage it's been rolled so many times, so it's worthless. His Brat is 100% rust free and one of the few nice brats on the East Coast, and there's no way he will ever get rid of his pontiac.

Damn thats alot to read, I just had to proof read it.
