Have an 86 Ranger that is currently set up for a manual transmission. I am installing a 98 Explorer v8 and auto transmission. Obviously I need an auto pedal assembly. I have the entire Explorer at my disposal, but I am thinking that pedal assembly would not fit. Unfortunately the yards around here do not have anything left that's older than about 95, or I'd go find a first gen with it and get what I need.

So what should I look for as a source for a pedal?

What all will I need to install it in my truck?

If anyone has one they want to part with please shoot me a PM. Once I know more what I am after I'll make a post in the classifieds.

I have a '79 rx-7 that someone else swapped in a v-6. It still had the clutch pedal in it when I got it. I removed the pedal and replaced it with some conduit or pipe, I don't quite remember as that was done many years ago. Maybe you could do something similar. The difference in brake pedals is that the auto one is wider, but that didn't bother me.
Good luck,

Richard

I considered leaving the clutch pedal in since I would like to swap back to manual in the future, but decided that would bug me to much. I pay too much attention to details and without the clutch pedal the narrow brake pedal would bug me too much as well. Since an auto is going in want the auto pedal.

Heres a crazy idear. Remove the clutch pedal, and if the narrow brake pedal bugs you to much, think of a clever way to made said pedal wider. Remove the rubber pad from it, drill some holes, and pop rivet on a walmart after market pedal or something. Honestly, if your commited to swapping back to a manual thats the cheapest and easiest route. Think about it. Once your ready to put a manual back in, all you will need to do is re install the clutch assembly and drill out the pop rivets on the walmart pedal and replace the rubber pad, and everyone will be none the wiser!! Just my two cents....:icon_thumby:

Ya lol... Just put a wider pedal on it... People switch pedals all the time... I don't think you need to remove the whole pedal assembly....

Ranger Kip: WTF is that even supposed to mean?

03ranger4x4: On this subject I'd appreciate it if you keep your 2 cents. The time wasted reading it was worth well more. I'm not interested in doing any ghetto rigging. If I wanted to do that I wouldn't have asked the question I would have just done it. I could care less what someone else knows or thinks about my truck or the way I do things, all that matters is that it's built to my satisfaction. I take too much pride in my work to do that kind of crap, even if it does mean more work in the future.

Bilzy7: That would work if the truck was already set-up for an auto and was wanting to change pads on it, but that's not the case. Not interested in aftermarket pads, perfectly happy with stock rubber. Just want the wider auto pedal instead instead of the small manual one.

racsan: I'm trying to figure out what that has to do with anything. I'm not working on a chevette or pinto, and will not pull some crap like that on my truck. Wiring is not going to be an issue because the entire harness in the truck is being swapped for the explorer's harness and as such will be wired for it's auto trans.

I thought I had asked a simple question. What do I need to swap the pedals and what year models will fit? Guess I was wrong about it being simple. Since nobody seems to want to give me a straight answer, I guess I'll just have to hope one a first gen auto shows up in a local junkyard.

For the first time since I joined this forum back around 2001 I am starting to agree that they are going down hill. WTF is going on here. Ask a simple question and it either get's ignored or you have 20 people chime in about how to ghetto rig shit, but not one that'll give you a straight answer. I'm about through trying to get help here, which used to be the best thing about this place.

The pedals are pretty much the same in your truck.

There is a C-clip on an arm through the whole thing. Pull it, take the clutch out, and put an auto pedal and rocker bar in.
