the Lawn Mower thread.

So a few months ago, i parked my rider. This morning I go to start her, check all fluids, and gotdam gas in the oil. I forgot to turn the shut off valve. I got most of the gasoil out, but wondering what danage I've done and is there a way to fix it, or is my motor done for?

Drain it all... add fresh oil... fire it up. The mower I mean...

Pull the plug... spin it over first.

Thanks @Uncle Gump . I panicked a little. Fired it up, not the mower, and thought about it. I already drained it and ran clean oil in it, turned it over a little, drained it and repeated. I will pull the plug and spin it over to spit any extra fuel out. Let it sit for a while then try again later.

Right on...

I would probably run it a bit... do another oil change.

Then remember to shut the fuel off

I've never seen any damage from gas sitting in the oil if you don't run it for an hour with it in there. Good job on catching it before things really could have gotten bad. Follow gump's instructions and you will be good to go.

Something told me to check fluids, even though i just did the plug/wire, oil change, new filter new magneto ... the works. Welcome to my world.

I check them to after something sits up. It's a good habit to have.

It probably wouldn't hurt to squirt a little oil in the spark plug hole and let it crank a little before starting it up as well. I try to remember to store my 4 stroke power equipment like that in an attempt to protect the cylinder and piston a little bit.

If your mower is newer there is a fuel shut off solenoid that is supposed to shut fuel off to the carb.

I think all they do is fail and kill engines, we have had more than a couple come in where people didn't check the oil and tried to mow their yard using gas for lube.

Shut the fuel off no matter what but if you wanted to fix that it would be a backup for you.

Fun fact: lawnmowers are often used to cut grass.

Dare I say that my mower runs better than ever? New plug, new fuel filter. It smoked a lot, then a little, then not at all. Now runs buttery smooth. Seems smoother than before.

I had my mower out last weekend, a ‘42 allis-C with a 6’ belly mower. Had to put a new battery in it but otherwise it fired right up. I usually run sta-bil in the last couple months before its put away and shut off the fuel to let the carb clear itself of most of the gas for the last time its ran before its shut off. someone before me converted it to 12V but didnt do the charging system, so everytime I use it I need to put battery charger on it , Magneto was changed to a conventional distributor so have to have a battery. Ive looked into a alternator but havent yet had the funds to get it (spent more than I thought I would with rockauto to accessorize the escape-800) I also want to put a 3-point kit on it, have a 3-point disc thats useless with a drawbar tractor and Id like to get a blade and a boom. Sure its a big mower, too big but I love that the backyard can be mowed in under 10 min where if I used the push mower its nearly a hour to do.

My ‘47 C needs a battery too. It still has a mag but I am lazy and like the electric start.

My 6’ shredder goes on my WD.
