The Kids Just Don't Understand

I have seen stuff like that happen, I pulled over to help a kid out of a ditch, They were trying to pull him out with an extension cord.... They ripped off the guys radiator tube, coolant was everywhere, I didn't help because I smelled alcohol on his breath so i just watched for a few minutes for a good laugh. I about pissed myself.

An extension cord? Now come on, that's just common sense.

When i worked in an autoparts store.....you wouldnt belive the idiots.

I actually had a guy come in.....and asked me how to get his hood open....

later,
Dustin

i got a funny story sort of like this, except it was just my experience with a cocky jeep driver while i was out four wheeling. Keeping in mind that i still only had my all terrains on my truck when i took this and the mud i was in wasn't the best stuff to play in...peat and muskeg.

anyways i chose my line to go straight through the middle of this stuff, and anyone who has ever wheeled in muskeg will tell you it is no laughing matter, this stuff is just like quick sand, sticky and wet and just plain in general sloppy. Not to mention with all the decaying and decomposing plants and everything else, it just smells like cow shit. To make matters worse, the all terrains dont hook up very well in it and just tend to spin on it like its ice.

Anyways enough about the 'skeg and back to the story. So i chose my line, and started to make my way through the bog. i hit it at a decent speed, in 4low in 2nd so i could have the momentum to try and get through it. Now there was a chick in a jeep that was done up with the boggers and the like just running through this stuff like nothing before i was going through it so it was all tore up and rutted out. At about midpoint through the bog i could just feel the truck starting to spin and sink, and i thought to myself, okay cool, downshifted to first and gunned it. No luck, just sat a spin, turns out the front diff was just plowing the goo. So as i'm spinning and reversing in this stuff, the chick in the jeep decides to get cocky and backs right up in front of me, and then she says YOUR STUCK YOUR NOT GOING TO GET OUT OF THAT STUFF NO WAY. Me being the person who doesn't give up, honks the horn, tells her to move aside and let me work it about. It took me about 5 or 6 reverse - forwards to get it to hook up and eventually got it out. I then went over to the girl in the jeep and said, well i guess i didnt need the jeep to give me a tow after all eh? she seem flustered and mad all of a sudden because she wanted to pull me out. heh

anyways heres a pic of my truck right after i got out of it. it doesnt look like i went through alot, but the 33s were sunk down to about half. i don't know what it is but muskeg doesnt tend to get vehicles right covered unless your flinging it pretty good. In this case i wasnt with the all terrains heh

the guy beside my truck is my friend wiping his hands full of muskeg off on my tow strap haha

i wish the previous owner of my truck understood the concept of knowing what to put on a truck that functions. thanks to that person the hitch reciever doesnt allow for the spare to go on. came off. oh yes. but when i try to put it on the latch that you bolt to the tire holder only comes back to a certain point and there still is a good 2 or 3 inches of tire before the latch could even think about allowing the tire to swing up. not only should people learn how to use stuff, but they should learn how to check and see if something will properly work on the vehicle

But i mean, a spare tire? Every one should know how to change a flat

a few months ago i was on my way to north adams with my g/f, and there was a new honda odyssey van pulled over with a flat, the two people were trying to hitch hike, but i saw they had a spare tire, a jack and the lug wrench on a lug.. so im like, whats the problem?

i pulled over, despite my girlfriend yelling at me not to.. the guy asked where the nearest cell service was (10 miles either direction).. and asked me to go on ahead and call the cops for him (instead of garage?).. i said well whats the problem, is your spare flat too? he said he couldn't get the lugs to budge, i walk over and the lug wrench is at 3 o'clock, which was my first clue this guy was....clueless.. i asked if he stood on the wrench and he said yes, i asked if he was going clockwise and he said.. well no.... left would be loosen, i repositioned the lug wrench at 9 o'clock and without standing on it, loosened all the lugs just pushing with my foot. i KNOW he was going the wrong way.

at this point his girlfriend had lost all faith in him, and when i asked if he would be all set from there, he said yes, and she said "honey, are you sure?" he was mad now and said thank you to me, as did the woman, and i took that as my cue to leave.. as i was walking away, he was re-tightening the lugs, why? i dont know.

my girlfriend can change a wheel and do her own oil changes on her jeep, she checks her fluids, and can change the air filter.. thats pretty basic stuff, but thats a lot more than most can do apparently (especially that guy).

We have this Toyota Tercel at the shop right now. Its standard and the guy tried changing the transmission oil himself. However, he forgot one important thing...To add the oil. We're lucky we have a Jeep with a push bar on the front of it for when retarded tow truck drivers who know the transmission is siezed and will not come out of gear and not let the wheels move at all, leaves the car at the bottom of an icy hill for us. For that case 4lo is my best friend.

For the assident thing. I think almost everyone of my freinds have done a serious amount of damage to their vehicle. A friend of mine who is a Mechanical Engineer drove his Jeep nearly to the point of distruction by not having any coolant in it from the thermostat gasket letting go. Most of the others have been because of them talking on cell phones, like turning to early and hitting the ditch 10 feet before the driveway (still havn't figured that one out, but she is a chevy driver so i guess that makes sence now).

The biggest problem with teens now is that either they are too stuck up or too "rich" to learn to do manual labour on their own. So many of the people in my area have the "I'll let someone else do it" attitude, thats why i'll charge to fill up windshield washer fluid at times, or change wiper blades, or fill up the tires with air. Also everyone now wants it RIGHT NOW AND IT HAS TO BE RIGHT NOW. Holy shit people, If you walk into my shop without an appointment and demand to have your vehicle serviced before the people with and appointment who have been waiting days, even weeks for it, you are going to be ignored and put on hold so I can inconvienance you as much as possible. Its different why then say "can I get an oil change now?" "no sorry, we're booked up today" "when would be the first chance I could get in?" that I don't have a problem with. Its the people "I need an oil change right now" "no, sorry, we're booked up today" "well and oil change doesn't take long, its easy *look into parking lot and see a 1 ton dodge diesel*" "Right, have you ever done one yourself on that vehicle?" That $50 dollar oil change there on the board need not apply in your situation, add another $70 for labour time and parts costs on top of that. People, do not demand to be first if you don't have an appointment, make the appointment, and then you'll get in right when you need to. sorry, end rant.

Have the same issues. Everyone wants it done RIGHT NOW!!!. I remember one Friday walk-in day. No appointments, just walk-in and have the work done. I open for that week, and no sooner than I get in sight of the work desk. Customers are jumping down my throat to get theirs done first. For crying out load, I haven't even turned the lights on yet. And there was 7 of there people. They then get all p*ssey about who's first and sh*t. To solve the problem, I just pointed and said a number. If no one is going to draw straws, I'll pick whos first, second, and last.

As for oil changes under $50. My shop does them. Its $14.50 plus the cost of oil + filter. Its usually around $30 for a 5qt. system. Diesel is extra, and those do come very far and non-exsistent.

Betcha he did NOT want to get his hands dirty and claimed to his girlfriend that the nuts were seized!!!!

I started to make an effort to pull over if it's she-folk.

I get to be the strapping young lass who gets to save the day.

I've gotten a few numbers that way.

Very true...

I made several attempts at teaching my last gf how to do this and each time she said that she didn't want to learn. I finally asked her what she planned on doing if she was out somewhere and got a flat. Without hesitation, she said "I'll just call you to come rescue me." I asked then what she'd do if I couldn't come for some reason. Her answer was "I'll just call my dad an have him rescue me."

When I was going to Edinboro for college, my last two years there I often had people asking me for auto help.... quite often someone was knocking on my door looking for help, cuz they spotted my trucks in the parking lot with my apartment number hanging off the rearview and decided I might be a likely candidate to help... especially when they saw the tires and truck parts decorating the doorway...

One night up there my one buddy calls me an asks if he can borrow a towstrap... First thing out of my mouth was for what? He goes, oh, we just got a car stuck, we'll just swing by and pick it up an bring it back when we're done. Ugh... No. You want to use the towstrap, I'm coming with it...along with all my other recovery gear.

We get over there an some girl he was dating slid her car around a bend and buried it in a snowbank. I made my buddy hook it up but made sure that it was hooked to something solid and least likely to damage anything, then directed someone to drive the car easy and to pull in 4lo SLOWLY. Came right out. I fear what may have happened if I wasn't there.
