The Great American Classic

I did grease the slides when I put it all back together, but that’s about it.
I’m thinking either the soft lines, or the calipers are sticking.

My garage is extremely humid because I occasionally get water running in during a heavy rain. The calipers sat around on a pallet for a few years.

Don't forget to look at the brake fluid, if it's not clear you can change it by using a turkey baster......

Many of the junkers I resurrect have dragging caliper pistons that come loose after forcing back in and replacing the fluid .

Just decided to redo everything on all four corners since I already into it this far.
Ordered rotors, caliper rebuild kits, stainless flex lines, and everything to redo the parking brakes.

when I opened up the LMR box this afternoon half the parts where missing, so now I need to wait on that.

Also the caliper pistons were some kind of weird plastic fiber material and disintegrated when I tried to remove them. So we’re getting new calipers too.

They’re phenolic IIRC, never seen them fall apart though.

Never heard of them falling apart, swelling and sticking in place absolutely heard of that though :). In theory a thermally stable strong material should be great in the application but in practice not so much...

That’s pretty common. They crack and fall apart from excessive heat and stress…. The 2 things that brake calipers never see.

It's the thermal cycles that do them in .

My old Mercedes station wagon is supposed to have steel pistons for this reason, some dufus 'rebuilt' them and used Phenolic pistons, they failed gong down hill in the rain ~ glad my Sweet (I boght the car for her) wasn't driving when they failed .

Finished with the brakes today. Rebuild the fronts completely. Then put new pads and rotors on the back. One of the back calipers was seized badly. I had to spend some time cleaning up the slides.

Should have just bought new calipers for all four corners, but realistically, the backs are fine.

Wife helped me bleed the bitch.

Took it for a ride, brakes are sweet now. nothing dragging. Took it for a 20mile test drive to the car wash, she was covered in spider poop.

110*F outside, AC works. I think the vents are moldy though. Got a sore throat from driving with the windows closed.

Couple CEL codes. Got to look into them a bit. Bank 1 Lean, and Misfire on 1. I expect some kind of vacuum leak. not surprised.

Few odds and ends too. Fuel gage is stuck, door hinges sag bad, driver side window is off the tracks and the weather stripping is falling apart, drivers seat is pretty messed up.

Once I get it inspected and such I'll clean up the small stuff.

Thanx for the update ! .

I didn't realize there were some 4 wheel disc brake versions .

I’ve never seen any of this generation with rear drums. This one does have 16” wheels instead of the standard 15” wheels.

Gotcha .

My 2001 needs rotors and RockAuto.com has them dirt cheap but cannot ship to California because of some document....

Sheesh .

Sheesh .

I got mine from LMR.com

they ended up being cheaper because of the free shipping. They had a four pack of rotors. Plus I wanted stainless flex lines, and they had those too, so I got everything together.

I’ve never seen any of this generation with rear drums.

Started for the 2010 and 2011 models. Prior to that only drums in the rear unless someone swapped in an Explorer axle or Mustang discs.

Federal mandate that required the majority of 2010 model light vehicles (and all by 2012) to be equipped with electronic stability control. It was easier for Ford to implement ECS on the Ranger with 4 wheel disc brakes than rear drum brakes. I'm not sure why they bothered with the Ranger since it would be discontinued by the 2012 all vehicle deadline (I'm sure they knew that by 2010), unless it was a quick, cheap, and easy way to meet the threshold and shared a lot with a different vehicle like the Exp or Mustang.

are we all talking about mustangs or rangers?

I’m fairly certain 4wheel disc has been standard on mustangs since the SN95. ABS or not.
