Thank you for all the help on the dipstick question. i replaced the PCV valve and checked the compression. i have the following compression

1.155
2.165
3. 55
4.145
5.155
6.150
this is the second 2.8 i have had that has had problems with the number 3 cylinder. any help or advice would help:

shoot some oil into #3 and recheck compression if it comes up, you got bad rings on that cylinder.

if it doesnt; is your oil milky or water-coolant got a slime in it or when the radiator is full and the engine running do you get bubbles in your radiator or are you loosing a huge amount of any fluid thats not leaking on the ground, you got a blown headgasket.

any of these would contribute to your dipstick troubles
