I was just reading one of the stickies regarding switching a TFI setup to a DPDIS setup and I have a couple of questions. How did you cap the hole where the distributor lives? Did you have to change front covers to accomodate the crank trigger? Any and all pics would be a help to me.

I've never done it, but you still have to drive the oil pump, even though there is no distributor. You install what is called an oil dummy drive, they are found on DIS engines. It just drops into the distributor hole.

Oh ok. When I pull the NA motor out, I'll transfer that to the turbo motor and that should take care of that little issue. Thanks Davis!

yep, that's that part

you have to swap the front covers and drill holes for the crank sensor in the block, I just typed up the explanation of doing this in the regular 2.3 board earlier, if the engine's out it's not that big of a deal to swap over, wiring wise it's not that big of a deal either

yeah, that would save me some typing :) I know I've done it before. so I think I'll add it to the sticky up top, I already added my wiring info for the swap up there if I remember right, which is good because I fried my computer (literally)

you know, I could always remember things I did like that, but nothing I needed for tests in school... I did that almost a year and a half ago.

I would just make life easy on yourself and use the NA block with the turbo pistons and rods. Drilling and tapping an oil return hole is less work than tapping 3 precise mounting holes for the crank trigger. I've also heard issues about the dummy oil pump drives failing after being swapped into a turbo block. Something about the allignment being off slightly. It takes out your oil pump if it happens.

drilling the holes is about an hours worth of work, and saved me from having to buy a head gasket and other things.

Yeah, the issue there is that the gear on the aux shaft and the oil pump drive will have different wear patterns. You always always always want to switch out an oil pump drive (or distributor) and aux shaft as a set. Once in a while you may get away with a mismatched set, but it's not worth the potential engine damage. I had one fail on me. It was not a fun thing.

crap, didn't know that... good thing I have a manual oil pressure gage, and the thing isn't my daily anymore...

I had heard about it, but didn't really take it too seriously til it bit me in the butt.
