TFI Module Replacement

I think I was reading an article about Ford putting it on the dizzy just to save some money. I am planning on doing the same remote setup as well once I can get my truck running again. Hopefully I can get down to AZ and have them test the module. My junkyard is having a half off sale for Valentine's Day.

MikeWild- Where can I find a ground wiring diagram?

For some strange reason I don't remember paying for the stuff to repair my TFI or to do the remote setup.... LOL.... (no, I didn't steal it, I was friends with the owner of the yard)

I used the remote mount heatsink out of an f150 with a 300 I6 I broke the fins off in the area where the three pins are that are supposed to go into the distributor and filed the area flat. I used a junk tfi, gutted it and used it as an adaptor on the back of the distributor so I wouldnt have to wrestle with putting spade connectors in there, it has worked fine so far. next is to modify the part that the tfi plugs into so I can use it as a plug for the remote mount instead of spade connectors at the module. The heatsink doesn't even get hot during the summer here so one would guess it is sufficient even with 3 of the cooling fins cut off of one side.

Where did you mount the TFI and what gauge wire did you use for the extension?

Were the bolts for the TFI module torqued down to hell from the factory? How the hell do you get these things out? I think someone replaced the TFI once, as only one of the screw holes had the bolt cover over them.

So how the hell do you apply some torque on these bolts to get them out?

You mean the holes for the bolts are supposed to have lil covers over them? I've never seen one like that....

I don't quite remember if I had trouble getting the bolts free or not... I remember fighting with it cuz I didn't have the right socket though...

If it was really stuck though I prolly either put my adapter on an used a bigger ratchet or I put a block of wood against my ratchet handle an wacked it with a hammer to try to get it free.... although that always bears the possibility of snapping something you don't want broken.... but I had a junkyard full of parts right next to me when I did mine (friends with the owner of a junkyard up at college).

Well I got the module tested today, and the guy kept getting different results. Sometimes it would pass, and sometimes it would fail. Does anywhere else test ignition modules?

Can someone help me with the socket size? My best guess is 5.5mm deep socket.

It is metric 5.5 AFAICT, but it is a thin wall bastard best served by an inexpensive tool from a FLAPS.

The parts places sell a dedicated tool, its the proper size thin wall socket with a large knurled grip. Well worth the few bucks when you're trying to work between the distributor and the firewall on a 2.9!

Yep worth the 6 bucks. Should be able to get it at any auto parts store
