terrible miss

i have a 91 2.3. i was coming up a hill this afternoon, hit 4th gear, and lost all power. there is a terrible miss coming from the 1st cylinder area. does anyone have any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?

how do you know it is #1. have you changed the plugs or wires recently. Do you have a spark on #1, do you have any codes. could be plug, wires, coilpack fuel injector. you could look at the engine at night when it is dark to see if you see any sparks on the wires or coilpack

it has the double spark plug setup. 15000 miles ago the top set were replaced but the bottom set werent. we figured it would be a waste of time for the second harder set to be replaced. i have a terrible feeling it is is the coilpack or the fuel injector.

imho. I think you should change all 8 and the wires. you can swap the coil packs if that helps to diagnose. I don't think the coil packs are that much cash. ....You have not told us how you know it is the #1 cylinder

CHECK compression on number 1 cylinder.

it sounds like the front cylinder. its not guaranteed the #1 tho. i will try to get ahold of a compression tester. first im gonna swap out fuel filters and and plugs and wires. i just hope to get power back.

Black widow had a good thought. If you have a compression tester you could check the compression then if your engine is shot you will not waste time doing the other stuff. you will have to decide what to do. there is a good chance it is a plug, wire or coilpack.

is your mil/cel light on. you should check for codes even if it is not on.

I'd start by testing the coil packs. real easy to do with a multi-meter.

I might be way out in left field, but my '92 Ranger did the exact same thing. Started missing real bad all of a sudden and had even less power then it had before. Turned out my timing belt was ready to go and slipped a tooth. Threw the timing off and it ran like crap. New belt and its a brand new truck. Check your timing, its free and easy.

The timing belt is a very good idea especialy if it happened instantly

Thats what brought it to mind because mine went from decent to crap instantly while getting on the freeway. Then it went even faster when it broke.

i put new wires on. it fixed the rough idle but bogs and shakes terribly at highway speeds. i have a new inline fuel filter, but im gonna wait for some help cause im not the most mechanically inclined and heard they r a pain to swap. thanks.

its fixed. all that money for the connection going bad on the fuel pump/sending unit. thanks for all the help.
