I'm swapping my 1992 Ranger 2.9l for a 1992 exp 4.0l. I have a 5 speed manual trans in the Ranger and the Exp had an Auto. I read in the tech library that you either buy a wire harness and computer for a manual setup or you can terminate the auto wire harness connections to trick the computer, but I have not found any information on what is needed to make the terminators. Does anyone one know how to make the terminations or can you point me to the information?

Thanks
Jeff

I havent herd of any one using an AT computer for a MT. there are diffrent fuel maps, idle settings, even diffrent evap and egr peramiters.

but i geuss it could be done, the computer would need to think the 2 solenoids in the trans (tcc, 4th gear) are still working or hooked up. so you would need to add the same resistance as the solenoids. (riostat or resistors)

i know obd2 systems are more testie and would throw solenoid performance codes, but as for obd1 systems like yours there more relaxed and may not throw any codes.

Thanks for the reply. I will spend the extra money and buy a ECM for the MT. I can buy one from autopartswarehouse for $125 and try and find a wire harness at the junk yard or worst case I modify the original AT wire harness so the backup lights and clutch engauge switch works.

I pick up the engine next week it cost me $350. Minus the exhauts and Trans, everthing else is there.
I'm replacing the Timing chain, gears and water pump while I have the engine out, $137replacing the exhaust from the Headers back, $650
replacing the clutch and flywheel, $230
with the added cost of the ECM $125 that brings the total cost of this swap to $1142. That is not to bad! I will be happy if I can keep the total cost at about $1500

If you see anything I've missed or can think of any recommendation please post to this tread. Thank you
Jeff

Don't buy from APWH. They're the biggest scam that's legal to operate in the US. Go to Rock Auto if you need new, or better yet buy used for a fraction of the price from someone on car-part.com.
