I have to replace the computer under the dash on tempo. it's up close to the cowl but inside. it looks like you have to remove the entire dash. but im not really sure. does anyone know?

thanks

didn't have to replace my Tempo computer, but if you can't access it though the kick panel then you may be able to get at it from behind the fender...fenders are easier to remove than the dash...that much I do know...I still have my haines manual for the tempo...see if I can find it and check that out for you...

There's no reference to removing the PCM in the manual. It really covers a lot of stuff, 2.3L 3.0L engines, automatic transmissions, all kinds of stuff. I couldn't find it in the index, nor did looking at most of every single page yeild anything to it's removal.

Are you sure that's not the passive restrait control module?

Looks like there is also a speed control module under there as well..

At least for my '93, I am not at all well versed with Tempos.

Double check the kick panel to be sure.

It has a typical 60 pin connector to the PCM (I did find that), I would know for sure if I saw it. I am tempted to go outside and look, but the neighors next door are out gawking as usual.

OK, I found my manual but there is no reference to the computer removal...and the manual covers 84 through 93 model years...

My Tempo was an 89 and, apparently, was the first year for the Fuel Injection...the 88 should have been carburated and would probably not have the same computer. Unless, of course, I'm mistaken and they started FI earlier. Clarification on this may be helpful...

well we did an engine swap from a 1993 but the 1988 is was EFI i don't know if it's original of not but my brother said it was an 88 but i'll check and see if its not an 89. But i do know it was EFI

You should be able to tell by looking at it. From what I recall, the fuel injectors are somewhat visible and are grey tops on the top/back part of the engine. I am thinking between the intake runners?

Autozone is showing it as a FI 2.3L... But it could be wrong, like I said, I am not well versed with these cars. All I know about (and is limited) is my '93.

Mine has a MAS, has a throttle body w/ TPS, TFI distributor, fuel rail, etc. I am trying to work on it tonight, will take a peek and let you know if I can't find the PCM.

Got in it the other day and just heard a click. I suspect starter since I just replaced battery, but I need to diagnose to figure out what the actual problem is. I am hoping it's something much more easier, even though it looks trivial to replace. LOL, hopefully my Ranger doesn't break down or else I'll have to go yard saleing for a temporary cheap 2 wheel alternative.

Pete: Check the starter relay (solenoid) and make sure the little red clip on the front post is secured properly...or take it off and clean it if you find it corroded...that happened to my Tempo at least twice...started just goes click and nothing happens...both times it was the little boot was not making contact and the engine simply won't start...I drove my Tempo for almost 400,000 and never had to touch the starter (battery twice though)...but every one is different..eh!

Rockin: There may have been some 88s that got FI or, like I said, I may be mistaken...but if an EFI motor was swapped in then it would need all the computer harness and everything too...

I remember buying my Tempo new and that's when they told me FI was new for 89...and I was reluctant to buy it because I don't like being a guinea pig on new products...but it was the best car I ever had...14 years and almost half a million klicks...

it may be titled as an 1989 but be a late 1988 which is why i would say 88 because i go by date made not licensed but i haven't had time to check but i am 100% sure the old motor was efi so i don't need to worry about the harness. It may be an idle control or something i'm replacing but i haven't been told anything i've been told get to that box and remove it and then i'll give you one to replace. orders from dad a mechanic of 50+ years so im going with it but he's not sure how to get to it because he hates interior work. But the "box" is up towards the top of the dash right by the firewall. well im done ramblin'

Thanks

It's a TIGHT fit. I found mine under the driver's side dash, above the fuse box. I couldn't get under there too well, but it looks like there might be a few bolts in place to be removed for this job. My back sucks, so I didn't spend much time under there. Definitely take every tool you can think of that you'd need.

ok so aspirin, bfh, flame thrower, antidepressant, pillow. am i missing anything. lol

thanks for all the help now i've got to find time to work on it.

That should cover it...but you might want to remove the driver's seat to make it easier to work under the dash...I am no contortionist myself but I did manage to change the heater rad core...that is a PITA and a half...

well tempo means time in some foreign language now i just need to find some tempo. lol yeah i corny but thats where i live Corny, Arkansas at least thats what i call it
