Temperature Sensor on a 4.0 swap

I just did a 4.0 swap (92 explorer into an 88 ranger 2.9) and the temp sensor just pegs itself. The 4.0 has a 2 wire connection and the 2.9 has a 1 wire plug. Can I use the 2.9 sensor or does the 4.0 need the extra wire for ECC input or something?


re to myself: I used the 2.9 sensor and left the 4.0 plug dangling.. seems not to mind, gauge works... anyone know how this will effect the ECC/engine performance?

I would definitely use the 4.0 sensor. Why wouldn't you?

Because it isn't working with my gauge.. the needle just goes to the top and stays there. Seems to work fine with the 2.9 one.. I haven't noticed any change and the gauge is working properly.

The GAUGE and the PCM sensors are completely separate. If you don't connect the latter, it's going to run very badly.

You can use the GAUGE SENDER from the 2.9L just fine. It's a thermistor just like any other. Just make sure your intake manifold is grounded (it should be).

A pinned-hot temperature gauge means the one wire is grounded.
