Does anyone know if the temperature sending unit fails, will it also turn on the Check Engine Light. 2010 Ranger XLT 4.0 litre 4x4 ?

There can be 2 similar temp units on the thermostat housing.
The temp Sender, is used for the dash board gauge only
The temp Sensor, is used by the computer, if it fails CEL would come on.

At some point Ford switched to just one for the computer and passed that data on to the dash board gauge, and it would turn on CEL if it failed.

Look here: http://bengrosser.com/howto/fordthermostat/remove-thermostat-disconnect-sensors.php

Steps 4-5 at the end, the pics show the 2 sensor/sender set up, on the 1 sensor setup one of the holes in the housing is blocked off.
