Anyone know where I can get a telephone pole? I want one to put a treehouse on. We don't have any good treehouse grade trees, just forest trees without real limbs.

Got a chainsaw?

Just kidding! Seems that a good building supply house could hook you up.

Go to the local electrical company and see if they have any old ones they want to get rid of.

They cut the old ones down all the time and put up new ones, shouldn't be hard to get a good used one. A buddies dad worked for the hydro company and he purchased alot of the old ones and ripped them down in a sawmill into 2 x 4's and used that to make his deck out at the cabin.

you might be able to get some if you contact your local telephone, electric or cable company. Tell them you would take some old poles that they replaced. I have gotten a few just by telling them to leave the old poles there on my property after they replace them. Also they might tell you where they buy their poles and you might be able to purchase some. Hope this helps I still need one more pole for my treestand.

I have two here for you. you pay shipping.

Most companies these days contract out the placing and removal of telephone poles. you would want to talk to the construction company they contract through.

you wouldnt want your kids touching a telephone pole though, they are soaked in creosote which is a nasty preservative. probably causes cancer according to the IARC.

you should contact a sawmill in your area. Indiana has a few.

Supposedly creosote isn't all that bad. It's more of just a really bad irritant. According to some studies that have been done involving people regularly exposed to it over many years, it doesn't seem to have much effect on the body.

It is kinda nasty though, and I wouldn't want my kid playing in it. I bet you can find something at a sawmill like mentioned above.

My dad and I used telephone poles to build a pole barn a few years back.

We just asked the local utility companies. Can't remember if the were free, or a small amount of money.

a friend of mine was able to get them free from PG&E. Because of their standards, after they pull a poll out of the ground, they cannot reuse them. So he was able to get several, and build a dock and a open boat storage on his property with them. It worked out really well for him since it keeps his cost low. I know his all have that creosote on them.
