quick question...i think this is the appropriate spot to post this..

anyways, my girlfriend has a 1991 ford ranger, with the v6 2.9L engine in it. sadly it has a blown motor....

she loves this truck, it was her first truck and she dosnt want to let it go, so im trying to surprise her by buying her a new enginge for it...however...the only one i can get is from a 1987 ranger, same specs, v6, 2.9L...would this be a direct drop in?? im not familiar with fords, not sure if the 87 engine will drop in directly to a 91 cause i know they were 2 different generations...but would the mounts all be the same and such?

thanks.

it should bolt right in.

what transmissions are in the trucks? (5 speed or autos)

You sure the 87 has a 2.9? I thought they had 2.8L

The long block will bolt in. The upper plenum (intake) is different, The left exhaust mani is different as well.
'86 was the first year for 2.9 but, there were a few left over '85 2.8 Rangers that were rebadged as '86s. I've seen a couple.

Yeah. Don't worry about EGR, the long blocks are the same. '87 heads are can be pretty shitty, though.

Depending on what went wrong, are the '91 heads still useable? You might hang on to them for spares if they're re-workable.

Pete

The upper intake IS the same, there is simply a "blank off plate" where the EGR valve goes on the later engines.

But it probably is easier to swap the upper intake.

I STRONGLY recommend removing the upper intake ANYWAY when pulling an engine from a 2.9 truck, because it avoids unnecissarily flexing the wiring harness to snake it off the engine.

Just out of curiosity where are you located?
