Well I decided to start tearing into the electrical mystery I'm having and after watching "Americas Most Wanted" with the old lady I decided to go out to the garage for a few hours and start digging in.

I bought two entire new cables that go from "the starter to the battery" and from "the alternator to the switch". They both looked pretty hashed and are original. Battery one was corroded bad and the alternator one only had about 10 strands left at the fusable link. Wires snapped like a dry branch when I bent it too!

I also decided to rip out my wiring harness to give it a thorough inspection because I'm tired of this problem and just want to make sure it's gone! I was going to try and use the 2.5 wiring harness I have but it's a little different from the 2.3 I found out. I guess on 98 and above there's no VSS sensor in the harness like the 95-97 model years. There's also no plug for the temp gauge.......wierd. It must be the second sensor on the water tube on the 2.5's but I'm not really sure.

Anyways, enough of my whining. Just wish me luck guys, and if you need pics of anything just let me know. Later.

Ok, well I've gone through the wiring harness and there's good continuity from the sensors all the way up to the PCM. There may have been a problem with the wiring at the "Cam Sensor" because there's a bare wire running the length of the sensor and covered in foil? I don't know why it's there because it's not on the 2.5 harness. I just cut it back a little cause it was wearing through the plastic sheathing of the sensor wires.

Changed out the fuel injectors as well. The new ones only have 80,000 miles on them where as my old ones have well over 350,000 miles. Here's pics of the older 2.3 ones (they're maroon) and the newer ones installed (they're grey).

Well now I'm going back out to the garage to remove the timing belt so I can change out the leaking front seal. Hopefully I can get this back together before 5:00 or 6:00 this afternoon. I'll keep you posted. Later.

lol was that the one with the arizona millionaire who's step kids killed her?

haha.....I did'nt see that part. It did have the one where the older couple who run a meat market got slaughtered in their garage at home. Their kids were wondering where they were at on Saturday morning and low and behold.....

The son sent his girlfriend to the residence and there they were, in the garage stabbed to death multiple times. Sad because apparently robbery was'nt the motive.

that third wire on the cam sensor is the shield most likely, it's just to get rid of any possible interference in that line... it probably just goes to ground somewhere down the line...

just out of curiosity, look at the fuel pressure regulators, do they say something like "3 bar" or "4 bar"? if so, are they both 3 or 4? don't know if they would have changed that, but it might be worth looking into...

Do you mean the injectors? I think they'll still work won't they? They plug right in with the wiring harness.....Too late now....haha

Getting really close to the moment of truth now. Should be fring her up in the late morning early afternoon. I swear, if I did'nt fix the problem I'm taking her in to the shop. Later.

the fuel pressure regulator, I don't know why they would change the pressure it regulated to, just thought it might be a possibility... but then again you are running with the 2.3 rail and ECM, so it should still work together... was just thinking out loud :)

Pretty much got it back together but I have a new problem I 've got to figure out.

For some reason my starter won't engage when I turn the key......NOTHING!

If I jump the two terminals at the relay it turns over but not with the key. What do I have hooked up wrong?

thats the one.
about the starting-it sounds like your clutch saftey switch circuit

I did'nt touch that though. I just checked for continuity and frayed wiring and then just put everything back.

I've got over 12v going to the starter and everything looks good. What a nightmare! I'll start a new thread regarding my NEW problem now. Where else should I look?

Allen

it sounds like the wire from the key isen't energising the relay.have you turned the key and had someone check if theres power at the relay?then just work back toward the ignition switch looking for where the power stops

Thank you so much guys for your information but it was my dumbass fault.

When I had the wiring harness out I forgot to reconnect both 02 sensor wires and the other one that's down there by the bellhousing. After I reconnected those wires she started right up.

Would have never guessed that would cause the starter not to work......doh
