I have been thinking about putting FI on my engine for a few reasons.
1. I live in alaska and it would be nice to not have to mess with my carb. on cold mornings.
and 2. For a peppier engine that gets good gas mileage.

so i found this site that sells rebuilt or new GM TBI units for fords and other engines. Would it be worth it.(I live in alaska so finding an old 3.8L is pretty had to come by unless i want to buy a running one for about the same price.

heres the link.
http://www.affordable-fuel-injection.com/ford-tbi.htm

also it only goes down to 200cid but i have a 171cid 2.8l. would it still fit?

Umm, for $1000 you can buy a complete used 2.9L with the wiring harnesses and computer and get PORT fuel injection. 2-5 times over.

Affordable? My posterior.

More to the point, for $1000 you can buy a whole fuel injected vehicle. Like a 1986 Ranger with a 2.9L.

Yeah i could but i want to keep my 2.8l not buy another one with a 2.9l.
and they are also very hard to come by up here because they want over $2,000 for most of them (which isn't that many) and all of them are rust bucket POS's. trust me i have looked everywhere in over 200 miles of where i live. also i have heard some bad stuff about those engines like cracked heads and stuff. I like my truck because it has only one owner and has just about every thing i want on it short of a lift and some 31" and a roll bar/w lights.

If you are going to hack together something, don't expect it to work well.

And it certainly isn't legal. Emissions and all that (it's a Federal crime to disable emissions equipment, so don't claim it doesn't apply unless Alaska has somehow seceded from the US).

Head cracks aren't exactly hard to identify on an assembled engine. They are the ones with puke in the crankcase.

they do have standards in ak but my truck has no emissions stuff on it for one and two nobody care down where i live anyway. the cops don't seem to care if you have no cat. or exhaust just as long as it is not obnoxiously loud. it also comes with all of the sensors and stuff i think. the only emissions thing on my truck was the cat and it wasn't helping because it was completely clogged. i couldn't blow air through it when i took it off.

No, the emissions on your truck included a computer, smog pump, heat riser, feedback carburetor, electronic ignition, evaporative emissions system, and positive crankcase ventilation, in addition to a catalytic converter. If you disabled any of those, you committed a Federal crime.

How about a 4.0? If you are going thru the motions of a EFI swap it wouldn't hurt to get something with a little snort and alot more reliable, I know wrecked Explorers are advertised for a couple hundred bucks every once in awhile, and I am not even really looking for one. Heck $1000 would probably get you a wrecked F-150 with a EFI V-8 of your choice down here, I do imagine the pickings are alot slimmer up there though.
