Im having a weird starting problem with my Ranger. After I turn it off it wont start for about 5-10 minutes, it always starts back up but it has to sit. Im thinking maybe the fuel mixture is too rich so maybe the O2 sensor is dirty or malfunctioning or maybe its a vacuum leak, but I dont really know. Also when it wont start the starter doesnt sound like its being very effective, it revs kind of high and high pitched, dont really know if that means anything. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

check your tartar fluid level, fill with tartar sauce as needed....

So your saying you can hear the starter spin but the engine wont. Pull your starter out and make sure some of the teeth didnt get knocked off the flywheel or something (Its probably fine), and if your fly wheels fine bench test the starter. It sounds like the bendix(bindex?) on the starter isnt sticking out and catching the flywheel.
When you bench test it you should see the little gear spin and push out a couple inches, if it spins but doesnt push out, you need a new starter.

Make sure you brace that thing real good, ive never bench tested a starter but i hear they pack a punch.

Haha I noticed that typo after i posted it. I know the starter is catching and the engine is turning over, it just seems like it turns over too fast. Then I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes and it starts right back up. It sounds like the engine might be flooded which is why i'm thinking the fuel mixture might be too rich.

It's the bendix! Getcha a new one.

The starter engages and the engine turns over, are you sure its that?

Nope! If the engine is turning and it is turning too fast that could be the timing.. But if the starter is turning and it seems faster than the engine is turning that could be the starter bendix.

What doesn't make sense to me is that if I let it get up to operating temperature then turn it off it wont start until it sits for about 5-10 minutes.

So you're saying it doesn't start when its hot?

Yeah, it wont start until the temperature goes below the "O" on normal, right around that area.

starting problem

I just went through the same problem with my 93 4.0 ,after changing several sensors I replaced the computer ,problem solved ,I had a computer from a mazda 4.0 to test if the computer was bad ,the truck started and ran with the mazda computer but not good ,the computers are for a specific year and model option ,but it was how I found out I needed a new computer
