im not sure on what tranny i have all i know its the stock trans that came in it i have no clue on whiich tranny is what

My 87 ranger had ATF in the tranny when i bought it 4 years ago and i didn't know it till it went out about 3 months later. It has the Toyo Kogyo 5 speed ( tranny code #5) in it. I found a replacment tranny for it at the time ( with the right fluid) and just rebuilt the tranny that went out in it just a few weeks ago. The ATF takes the hardness off of the gears and bearings and makes for a really expensive rebuild as many parts needs replaced. The older rangers can run motor oil in the tranny and atf in the t-case, but the newer rangers are the ones that can run the ATF or motor oil in the tranny just as long as you stay with what it had in it before. the t-case on the newer rangers still only calls for ATF tho. Hope I helped. Send an IM if you need more info.

Which (if any) RBV tranny's takes engine oil???????

Certainly NONE that i'm aware of. And i've had many........

I checked the service info on your truck, you have to go to Ford to get the right tranny oil. Gear oil is a very bad idea. It's too high viscosity and won't flow throught the bearings. It can cause a burn up in an oil bath from lack of lubrication, 87rangerSTX, you should never use motor oil in a tranny. Trans aren't designed for it. The additives in the trans fluid are completely different than what are required in an engine. Ford has never used motor oil in a trans. Come to think of it, I don't know of any companies that have done that. SOME times a manuel trans calls for ATF but never motor oil.

My Honda calls for motor oil in the tranny. That's if it had a manual, but it's automatic. But the owner's manual says to use 10w-30 for the manuals.

10W-30 motor oil has about the same viscosity as 75W-80 gear oil. However, it has a completely inappropriate additive package for a transmission. Especially the "for gasoline engines" type -- the phosphates those leave out protect your transmission's nonexistent catalytic converter, and sacrifice anti-scuff properties to do so. Most modern engines have roller cams, so that's not so bad. EVERY manual transmission has gears that really could use that....

Your Honda doesn't call for just any motor oil. It gives an API spec. Check it. If it's a "C" spec, it's probably OK. If not, go looking for a TSB, 'cause it's going to change.... That is, if you're absolutely sure about that ('cause I doubt it as well).

ATF-bearing manual transmissions are commonplace these days.

?
Gear oil is the spec'd lubricant for his transmission.

Yes......

But it HAS to be a GL4 specified oil, not GL5 (which is what most 80/90 gear oils off the shelf are)
I've run regular "gear oil" in my mitsu's and tk5's, and have had shifting issues, especially when cold.

I'm pretty sure Honda now recommends using their own brand of MTF in their cars as a first choice. That's all I use in mine. They revised the formula a few years back and now is much closer to ATF than Motor Oil. I thought reading somewhere (another forum) they put out a TSB on old models recommending the new fluid vs. what was in the manual.
