which years have a tailgate similar to this? with the lettering all the way across it? and would it be able to bolt into my 1990 ranger?

ranger tailgate

it will work perfectly they interchange between 1983-and 1992 with no problem

1983-1992 are the same tailgates. In the late 80's until 92 Ford had put that ugly silver looking plate on the tailgate just for look reasons. If you remove that silver panel it has the (4) Ford letters behind it.

83-92 tailgate will fit.

whoa.. really? I'm gonna take the plate off then because I hate that thing.

At least that is what I remember from back in the day when people were buying them new. A couple of friends bought the xlt and removed the silver plate and remove the plastic bracket and repainted the letters. If you have the plate you should also have the letters. I doubt Ford would change the tailgate just for the cover.

took 4 screws out of the cover
and it stayed on.

so i started prying back a corner to see and there are i believe 6 plastic brackets. i was disappointed.

took the cover off and the plastic brackets are screwed on from the inside of the bed.

so i unscrewed my drop in bed liner, and took the brackets out.

i mean i have the FORD stamped letters... but now i have holes in my tailgate... really disappointed. i love the letters, and want to paint them, but first off i have holes in my tailgate!!! second off idk what colors really.

do the holes matter besides aesthetics?

They can let water in which can rot out the bottom of your tailgate.

You can get them both ways from about the begining of time, my '85 brochure shows them both ways but doesn't mention what comes with what, I would guess the fancier trucks got the aluminum trim piece and the more basic trucks got decal leters.

BTW aftermarket tailgates don't have FORD stamped in them, they just have the raised rectangle.

took off the aluminum trim, and going to take off the plastic brackets. I have Ford stamped into my tailgate now, I was going to repaint my truck for a project so for now I'll seal up the holes with some bolts, and then when do paint it I'll just put filler in it.

just a question, what if i wanted to put that style on my "93, would i have to mod it at all to have it fit perfectly?

not to hijack your thread, just wondering

cut, weld, fab ,cut, weld, fab and repeat till it all looks good

Here's what I'm going to do when I get all the parts
