Have a 96 Ranger. Just can't get the tailgate to open. It feels like the left side opens but the right side does not. Any ideas?

do you have a plastic handle? open up that metal plate on the back of the tailgate and look in there to see whats wrong.

There are some plastic clips that pull on each side. Mine did the same thing, only one side would open. I went to Ford and got the new clips for about 5 dollars.

They look similar to this:

Pop in panel off the inside of the tailgate and pull the rods toward the center, that should allow you to open it.

The dealership was closed when I had to fix mine, so I just stuck the rod back through the hole and lashed it with strips of duct tape. Been holdin' up for a year now. :icon_thumby:

Nice! Duct tape holds the universe together. Mine was too far gone to do the Red Green thing.

I went to Autozone and the guy there sold me a pack of universal clips made by Dorman. None of them worked, so that was a waste of time and money.

Ok, I removed the metal panel and found a plastic clip broken so i just tie-strapped it in place until i can get to the dealer to get one. Thanks
