My 89 b2 eddie bauer has the rear defrost and wiper. The lift struts are all but worn out (work about 80 percent in the warm and 25 percent in the cold.) I replaced the gray bushings that the latch closes on . When I close the hatch the drivers side doesn't latch completely. If I push on the corner (at the latch) it latches completley. This is a pain because the cab light stays on if it doesnt close all the way. It's also fairly difficult to open. It's almost impossible to open on any kind of slope. Is this normal or are the latches themselves worn out/dirty. Those gray bushings also seem to get chewed up quickly as well, but the ones for the driver and passenger door aren't even there anymore and they close fine.

My 84 BII doesn't have any of those grey bushings, and everythign opens/closes smoothly and with no "push on the corner" issues. I think that I would take the bushings back out, since they seem to be causing more trouble than you had to start with, that and get some new struts, or find a piece of pipe to hold the hatch up. ( I am using a 1/2 EMT conduit bender from when I did elec. work. Works great. I simply rest one end on the striker mounted on the body, and the other end catches on the bearclaw mounted on the hatch.

have you tried lubricating the latches

You can get the struts on ebay for about $35 shipped. I just bought a set and they work great.
