Tailgate latch broken

My tailgate latch is broken. It wont release on passenger side. How do I get to it to either repair it or replace ? I don't see any access panels. 1988 XLT

If equipped, remove metal cover on inside of Tailgate....
most likely you snapped a plastic tab.

There isn't a cover on the tailgate. Do I access it thru the latch after removal ?

Use a screw driver to open the gate, it should open out that way.

What ever you do, do not buy the handle (if that's what broke) from LMC theirs sucks! Buy a dorman one off of amazon, pre 93 ranger tail gate latches suck, bad design, the handle more the likly has a lot of play not allowing the latch to move enough to release.
