Tach reads wrong

1999 Ranger tach reads at about 4000 at idle and 4500 cruising.
Drops to zero when ignition is off.
Please help
 
I would suspect bad wiring or a bad tach. One is easier to diagnose than the other... just pick up a cluster from a JY and test it out.

now today everything works fine
