I know this should be in another forum but been searching and cant find answer. My tach sit at 3 on guage and will move up and down a little but thats it. When i bought the truck on the way back after about 100 miles tach started working fine. After i shut it off it and restart it goes right back to 3. Havent got it to work again. Any ideas? Its a 92 4.0 4x4 5 speed

Could be a damaged wire somewhere or a bad gauge cluster or something along those lines. Of course, the stock tachs are not known for being overly precise and I've grown used to not using one, but I can understand wanting to fix the problem. Chances are you'll have to pull the gauge cluster though.

Tried to pull cluster but couldnt get it out far enough to get hands behind it to disconnect wires to get out. Anyone have problems with that?

Try to get Speedo cable disconnected should then be able to get to elec connectors then

Yep, it's the speedo cable holding things up, it can be a real PITA to disconnect, I've done plenty of them to know. You have to try to get a hand behind it and find the connector, then squeeze the retaining clip to disconnect it. I'll have to hunt through some of my pictures and see if I can find ones pertaining to that, I want to say that I thought about taking some pics of it at some point.

Once that is disconnected you should be able to pull it out far enough to unplug the two wiring connectors.

Just be glad it's not an automatic, there is a fine thread in a thin plastic tube that controls the gear selector indicator that is attached to the cluster too on those.

If the speedometer cable in 92 was like the 88s then you'll probably have to lay down in the floorboard and reach up from the bottom to just barely get one finger one the clip to release it then have somebody pry you out of the floor cause at the angle you'll be at you'll have NO strength to move yourself. Then just pull the instrument cluster forward being careful not to push it back trying to get your fingers behind it. It really is a PITA. And the back.

Wahooo cant wait lol. Will give it a try in the morning.

could also try

1 disconnect cable from trans
2 pull cable toward front of truck to gain slack to pull a little more inside behind cluster now you should be able to get your hands back behind cluster without being a circus freak...

of course i have never done this so don't even know if it is possible.
