I have read every thread that I could find on this subject and they all seem to say, add a ground to pin 16 on the C214 plug. What do you do if pin 16 already has a wire that goes to ground? It shows this wire on my wiring diagram for a 95. My tach reads at least a third high. This had a 4.0 V6.

Pin 16 from connector C214 goes to connector C216 pin 8. This allows your V8 to run your factory tach correctly

Thanks. I'm looking at the Instrument cluster circuit diagram. Pin 8 (pnk/lt grn) on C216 says "engine control system". Do you know where it goes or what it does to change the tach over?

The location the wire is going into (pin 8) will be an open pin, there should not be a wire in this location. I'm not sure what it is by definition, but I know this is the change thats needed to make the tach work correctly...

Sorry mudhound, I'm not sure what all GEN's it works for, but in this case it is for GEN IV + Rangers (95+)

Thanks. My dash definitely has a pnk/lt grn on c216 pin 8. It is not a gnd. My c214 pin 16 already has a wire and it is a gnd. Maybe I'll have to try something else like a v8 tach. If and when I get this money pit back from a calif roadtrip I'll post some photos of the build.

I took the tach out of a 95 full size Bronco and modded it to fit my cluster in my 91 Ranger. Just had to trim some ridges and one corner to make it fit. Plugged right into my cluster and works perfectly.

Does this also apply to the 1st gens? Ie, an 87 to be specific?

There are two "thingy's" on the back of your tach that can be adjusted with a small flat bladed screw driver to correctly readout for a V8. Only thing is, you need another V8 tach hooked up at the same time while doing it. This is how I did my 89.

I just picked one up, trying to figure out how to make it work.

Where are the these thingies at? Inside the really small holes by the light bulbs? I can see the bigger holes have green film behind them.

I already tried what you are doing with my 4.6 and it didn't work for me either. I was going to install one of those tach generators, but never did. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the signal for the tach is different with the 4.6 ECM vs. the 4 or 6 cyl.

BTW nice looking build you got there, look forward to the build thread.

I know this is a pretty old post but are you saying that you switching pin 16 to pin 8 will allow my factory tach to read the signal? And then I will be able to tune it with the two adjusters? Sounds easy enough. I located the two adjusters... But I'm using a msd ignition so does the tach output go into pin 8?
