I just bought a 91 Ranger, 4.0, standard, 4x4 yesterday... Matter of fact, I haven't even saw it yet....

Anyway I was reading the sticky at the top of the page and learned that it more than likely has a B-W 13-54, since it has the 4.0 engine.... and it could be either electronic or manual shifted...... (hopefully manual)

The question is.... how strong is this T-case... Is it strong enough to stand the riggors of serious offroad abuse.... I'm planning on mounting a NP205 behind it..... can it handle it or should I start looking for a replacement.....

Thanks in advance...

the 1354 is a pretty strong case and there have been few issues with it. it will handle it just fine. you will sooner have issues with the tranny. spend your money on other stuff first.

The transfer cases in the rangers are good, and can handle V-8 power. People think they are weak because they are chain driven, but like he said.....there are hardly any issues. Now the manual tranny will be alright to. The a4ld autos and the older manuals are weak. The mazda r1 is the strongest, and most reliable tranny that came stock with any rbv, IMHO.:D

how strong is a 1354? stronger than your stock transmissions and axles.

the transfer case is the LAST place i would look for strength issues in an RBV.

Meh, my 1350 had a shit ton of slop and made all kinds of bad popping sounds in low range before I replaced it. My dad has also had a 1350 blow up in his old street driven b2... But yes for the most part they are stronger than the rest of the drivetrain...

1350's also have a 4 gear planetary vs. the 1354's 6 gear.

but of coarse cases fail. every moving part on a vehicle is susceptible to failure. the point is t-cases are rarely the first part to pop. how often do you see posts like "auto tranny wont go into gear" or "rear axle making funny noises" vs ones like "1354 blew up".....

They do fail, Esp. when you drive them on dry pavement in 4wheel. LOL

A '91 4.0L with the standard trans is pretty stout all the way through, engine to axles. Unless you'll be running tires bigger than 35s (or like to hammer the pedal to the metal all the time), there's not a whole lot to worry about on that truck.

Earlier Rangers (before the 4.0L came about) had some issues however (most notably, transmissions and the tiny D28 front axle). I've seen a couple issues with the bearing & u-joint on the front slip-yoke output of the 1350 t-case myself, also. The 1354 instead has a fixed yoke on the front.
