ok i have a 98 xlt x with a sohc and auto with a bad tcase.i also have a 91 ranger with a 2.9 and 5spd with a elec shift case and a 86 bii with a 2.9 5 spd and manual tcase.
the bii is junk, but has great running gear and i want to put the case from it into the ranger and the rangers case in the x...is all this possible?
the x has a 4405 i think...auto,4h and 4l...the ranger has a elec 1354 and i think the bii has a 1354 also but manual shift.

can anyone help with this?by x is down and i need it.please help answer if you can.i want to put the 1991 ranger t-case in the 1998 x.the ranger is a 2.9 with a 5 speed and the x is a 4.0 sohc with auto.

I do believe the '91 case will bolt up to the Ex's trans, but you'll need to swap it's controller and all the control wiring in too. Driveshaft mods may also be needed.
I haven't actually done this though, so this is all just speculating on my part.

Stock case in a '86 BII will be a 1350.

The biggest problem you'll have is the front output shaft. The 98 has a c/v joint instead of a u-joint and the flange doesn't come off of the c/v output shaft. It's part of the shaft.

I have a 97 Explorer, 4 door. I have put a manual Borg Warner 1354 transfer case from a 91-94 Explorer into it. I had to use the front drive shaft from a 91-94 Explorer, as well as shorten the splines in the slip shaft by about an inch. Has been working fine for around a year now.

ok thanks,i think it would be easier to put my 95 x sport's case in the 98 x and just leave the ranger alone for now...isn't the 1350 weaker then the 1354 that is in the ranger?

Im sure it is plenty possible to do what you want to do with what you have available, with minor mods, and possibly needing a new driveshaft or two.

Im not sure how well your Explorer's power will do with a bw 1350 though... considering its a 2.9, I expect it to be a BW1350, and if it is a 1354, I bet its one of the early-models that only had 4 planetary gears. (I think thats the difference? 4 vs. 6 planetaries?)

ok,so i can bolt in the 95's case...its an x sport into the 98 x right...no problem but front driveshaft out of 95 needs to be used in 98(looked at them already and they are different).also what tranny will be in a 95 x sport with an ohv 4.0?its auto. and what about my 98'it has a sohc with auto?
