i can't find a gasket for the transfercase/transmission seal. let alone what to call it at the autoparts store. any ideas as to what to use/ask for? i'm about ready to do the my swap but i need a gasket. will a cereal box work?

i wouldnt use cardboard. it'll get wet and disintegrate. most auto parts stores carry bulk rolls of gasket material, you could make your own with that.

i havnt used a gasket between the two in many years.

make your own

Make your own, get the sheet or roll of gasket material.
Make a pattern from regular paper (saves wasting the gasket material when you make a mistake).
You get to use the good scissors :icon_rofl:
Bring back memories of 1st grade cutting holes and patterns.
Who says they don;t teach good stuff in school.

i am the only owner of "good" scissors in the house :D

alright i'll go get the material... i had a bad experience with replacing my cartridge fuel filter ( they gave me the wrong gasket and gas leaked all over for like 8 hours without me knowing) so i don't want to take my chances on the tranny leaking fluid all over the place. leaks enough power steering as it is :icon_rofl:

Yes, you DO need a gasket on a 1987 4x4. The later ones had rear seals, but that one doesn't. There is gear oil right up against the front of the transfer case.

Black RTV works fine, but getting the transfer case off again next time may present a challenge (on my '86, I used to force it off with the bottom-most bolt, against the transmission mount -- it wouldn't come all the way out until the transfer case was broken loose).

Alternatively, you can find a gasket at a transmission shop or the Ford dealer. They are quite cheap; a few years ago, they were under $5.

thanks for correcting me mike. i realized as soon as i read his second post that id made a mistake :icon_thumby:
