I just blew up my 4th Mazda M50D-R1 transmission on my 94 4.0L (third gear is stripped). I plan on getting another 5 speed. However, I want to get a 5speed with a manual T case. My current auto-T case is the Borg Warner 1354 Electrical. I have some issues shifting into low range (I think it's the wiring harness) and a manual T case will solve this problem.

Questions:

1) How difficult is the swap (i.e shift leaver location, wiring harnesses for instrument panel)

2) Is the manual T case "better" compared to the Electric?

3) Which year manual T case should I look for (ranger, explore, Bronco II)?

thanks

might try our Tech Library as most of your answers are there for sure. too bad about so many trannies going bad. really haven't heard of those being that bad before. perhaps you need a beefier aftermarket tranny for it? one of the advance adapter trannies maybe. anyway, good luck with it and welcome to TRS.

Ya I was just looking at that. Sorry I posted before thoroughly searching. It looks like I will just have to find a 1354 manual off any old ranger/BII/expo.

As far as the transmissions go. All failed as a result of high speed off roading. I stay in 3rd gear most of the time and I don't think the gears like the constant shock of 33" tires skipping over rough terrain and getting airborne. This last transmission held up the longest. It was off a 80's(?) 2wd bronco II and I ran full synthetic gear oil in it. I think gear oil absorbs shock better than ATF so....??

So the moral of that story is "go slower". Right?

the oil has nothing to do with the shock busting parts.

try not beating the shit out of the truck, really, or you'll break every transmission.

I dunno about "every" transmission. A ZF5 with 7.3 internals might stand up to that.
