System Lean Bank 1 and 2

There was a Tech bulletin from Ford for the Windstar throwing a 170 and 171 at the same time. It was a loose vacuum hose going to the fuel pressure regulator. The fix was to put a plastic tie(zip tie) on it.

My 95 has the same codes and you should do what everyone else has said. And as for the way the EGR tube seals in the intake is a rubber o-ring. All you have to do is remove the upper intake and replace that O-ring and it should seal back up. Be careful when you put the upper intake back on so that you don't pinch your new o-ring.

My motor is throwing the same codes. About the oil getting on the gaskets and making them swell, this sounds about right in my case, cause the truck I took the motor out of was a roll over totaled truck, in which the 4.0 was hydro locked with oil. I had to pull the plugs and pump it all out before it would even turn, but after doing so it fired instantly. The motor is fine, but i had oil everywhere and before I put it into my truck, I Gunked the shit out of it. So the gaskets being bad is not so unbelievable in my case.

Well, I figured out what was wrong. I did a DIY project and put on a Thrush Magnum Glasspack on it. well, the Glasspack doesnt shoot back enough air, throwing off the O2 sensors. So, im going to get the local guys to install a flowmaster 40 series straight pipes out the rear for 180.00 :)

thanks for the info. I have ordered a new seal from my local Ford dealer. One more question if you would...can I install the o-ring by removing the EGR and lowering the tube instead of removing the intake? In the picture the dealer showed me, it appeared as if the tube might have a bend at the top that could preclude removal by this method. I have also toyed with the possibility of just wrapping the leaky joint with heat shrink tubing-any comments on this hairbrained idea?

TIA
Zonker

what makes you think its the glasspack causing the problem?

i seriously doubt it has anything to do with your exhaust...especially if you havnt touched the cats.

Zonker,
you can't get the EGR tube out of the intake because of the bend in the tube. I think it works best if both the intake plenum and the EGR tube is loose. And as for using heat shrink tubing I wouldn't reccomend it just because it would suck really bad if you sucked the piece of tubing through your intake and into the engine.

My 99 ~ 4.0 did great as long as the air temp was over 40*, but, on a morning that was 30s* or colder, it was gonna throw either left or right bank. Mostly the left. I carried my OBDII meter on the pass seat during winter and the light would come on after it warmed the water temp. I plugged in and removed the error for the day. Ford said the enricherner was a little too drippy and caused a small backfire every day on cranking cold. Also the 1st couple years of OBDII Ford V6 computers were way too picky on backfires. I just learned to live with mine. I hope my 07 is cured!!
