Synthetic oil-How many Miles?

Then you're still living in the 1970s. Changing oil every 3500 miles is WAAAAY excessive, wasteful, and pointless. Sure back then, you had to change it every 3k. But oils today are leaps and bounds better than oils made 10, 20, 30 years ago. Even the cheapest conventional oil can go 5k no problem.

And more. My new 2010 Taurus's first oil change is supposed to be at 7,500 miles (I changed it myself at 600 miles though...there's no way I'm leaving 'break-in' oil in a new engine for 7500mi !)

Don't forget the added pollution that comes from changing oil too frequently.

So none of you guys change more frequently in winter months? I've always been told to change more frequently in winter months, and I live a mile from work so my vehicle never reaches normal temp before I shut it off again. I change 2,500 in winter and 3,500 summer or 3 months whichever is first, but I don't use full synthetic either; I use Motorcraft synthetic blend. As it is, I put on maybe 100 miles per week average.

there is a reason why ford wanted tht break in oil in there for 7500 miles ...... it take roughly 12,000 miles before those bearings reach full hardness.

if you are only driving 2 or 3 miles a day, then you should be changing your oil once a month.

The reason I change my oil every 3 - 5,000 miles is because I live in what is concidered an Extreme enviorment because I regularly start and run it the -40 to 30 degree range for about 8 months out of the year. Even though it usually gets up to operating temperature I still wanna know the oil in my engine is good. I do swap the filter out every half period as well. It probably wouldn't hurt to run it to 7500 but you know what my old 2.8L is still runnin good and surprisingly not burning any oil with over 450,000 miles on it with 3,000 mile oil changes and thats proof enough for me.

My moms car went through two engines and we changed that every 5000 because its pretty darn retarded to change oil atleast once a month...

the only way to know for sure you are not burning oil is to get an oil analysis done. I have a Suzuki with 262,xxx miles that never shows low on the dip stick, but take it on a road trip (like to Indianapolis the other day) and it lost 2 quarts for 300 miles round trip ....... I bet the 2 quarts it lost was fuel pretending to be oil and it burned off because of the sustained operating temp........

internal combustion engines will burn oil, thats all there is to it. you will lose oil through the rings and the valve guides...... this will be replaced by fuel. this is not a problem when you change your oil at recommended intervals.... but just because you oil level is always full when you check it does not mean it is full of oil, specially when you have oil seeping from around gaskets and seals. Get the UOA done.

if you are only driving 2 or 3 miles a day it is retarded not to change your oil once a month. if the oil never gets to operating temp it never burns off the acids and impurities that are a by product of combustion so it stays contaminated.

I am a big fan of extended oil drains....... but only with a good synthetic and bypass filtration. Gonna change the oil in the Kenworth on Monday, but it has 112,513 miles on it (the oil) and has had 10 UOA done on it....... gonna cost me 5 gallons of royal purple, a Baldwin filter, and an amsoil bypass filter........ about $202 all together....... saved about $600 by using synthetic and bypass filtration.

I spent more than that on it, but i am also going to grease it, change the coolant filter, fuel filter, transmission filter (yes I filter the transmission oil), power steering filter, and the filter/cartridge on the air dryer.........

Well I mean its not burning noticable amounts, I have driven it almost 1,000 miles in a month one time and it was still full, it leaks oil out the front seal which I account for... whats a UOA? I almost always let my truck get up to operating temperature, and even when I don't I make sure to warm it up and run it around a little more.

UOA= used oil analysis.....

i do mine twice a year with mobil one right before winter then in spring.I really dont care if i change it and its still got more life in it better early then late.
