Here's one for about $55. Although some have had bad experiences with this ebay company, but inexpensive kits are out there.

Reasons?

They throw out way more usable light than any Silverstars I have run and they have already lasted longer than some of the Silverstars Ive had. They dont have the "cool" blue look do them but instead are a brighter white light.

I would be afraid to put a HID kit in the gen 3 ranger headlights because they dont produce a well defined beam pattern. HID's can put out so much more light than halogens you have to be careful you dont put them in just any reflector housing. Some reflector housings do an ok job of keeping light down towards the road, but others, like I suspect are on our trucks, are really bad and the glare will be aweful to other drivers. Plus a high-low setup might be hard to find for the H4 bulb size

The link I provided offers kits for all the common bulb types, including H4.

As to reflector design issues, that's probably accurate. I've never installed a kit on a car, just on a motorcycle. It's imperfect, but tremendously better than the stock halogen bulb.

Aftermarket HID's are not legal for use on public roads. Not saying you'll get a ticket...just saying you could.

A proper HID installation requires a "projector", which is a housing and lens assembly. The projector lens directs the beam in the right place, and creates the right cutoff line so the light doesn't shine too high. A HID bulb in a halogen reflector will put lots of light where you don't want it, like in the eyes of drivers of oncoming vehicles. It also requires a ballast, which hooks to your existing wiring and fires the HID bulb, and is included in any decent kit.

Finally, HID's produce a whole lot of light...in my opinion, too much light. They can potentially create safety problems by blinding drivers in oncoming vehicles. If you need that much illumination to see on a public road, you probably can't see well enough that you should be driving in the first place.

But if you decide to go that route, I'll help you if you need it...until you get a ticket.

That's why I got driving lights

I originally wanted foglights but don't like the factory location since it seems like a vulnerable spot (lots of Rangers in my area missing one foglight...). They're low enough to help in fog and high enough they still shine a bit down the road and help my headlights. Plus, I liked that location to mount them.

i bought silverstars, they are nice, and cost me $60. then i bought a set of 6000k HID's and put them in my stock headlight of my 06 ranger. they are probably 4x brighter and the light throws WAYY farther. if theres a reflective sign over a mile away, i can see it.

ill never drive without hids at night. nothing compares.

BTW: hids cost me 100 new with a year free replacement. and my friend has a set in his fogs that he was using 5 years ago in his buick. THEY LAST

I think the newer ranger headlights have a much better reflector than my gen 3.

i have them in my 1995 gmc suburban and yes they are brighter and i dont have on coming vehicles flashing there headlights when i have them on high beam
