Here's what I did to my 88 2.3 that was missing alot of the F.I. when I got it (some of the earlier F.I. engines has a block off plate on the block to cover the mechanical fuel pump provision), I took an old 2.3 oval port intake cleaned and filled about 5/16" or so of the bottom of the intake with epoxy and port matched it, the early 2.3 intake has the 2 barrel holley carb bolt pattern on it I used on of those 1" insulating spaces between the intake and carb so it would seal it up better, get a reman 350cfm holley 2barrel carb and bolted it on, unplugged and removed the high pressure fuel pump thats mounted in-line on the frame and used another F.I. fuel filter to reconnect the fuel line back together (my truck has a low pressure electric fuel pump in the tank), installed a mallory fuel pressure regulator with a pressure guage about 16" before the carb, fabbed a little bracket for the throttle cable to hook to the intake manifold. Since the computer and most of it's wiring was removed I had to find a wire that was hot with the ignition on and while cranking, and wired it to plug that goes to the intank fuel pump, I also changed the ignition over to the duraspark, got the wiring harness for it at a junk yard, then used the same hot wire for the fuel pump to power the ignition module. I get 22mpg in the city, 26mpg on the hwy at 65mph (my truck has a manual trans). I'll post a picture later on today of my carb setup.
To make the swap alot easier Esslinger has an adaptor to put a holley 2 barrel on a lower square flange F.I. intake, the F.I. intake bottom will perform alot better than my poormans early 2.3 intake.
