I have a 1987 Ford Ranger 4 Cylinder 5 Speed. My engine went on Friday night. I am going to replace but want to move up to a v6 instead of another 4 Cylinder. My question is, will the 2.9 6 work with the existing transmission? or will I have to replace the transmission as well?

Yes you'll need a 2.9/4.0 tranny. While I like the 2.9 better than the 2.3, you might as well go with a 4.0 if you're swapping anyways.

Actually, all the 1987 transmissions had removable bellhousings. But FM145s are a bit beyond their limit with 2.9Ls (though they did come from the factory that way).
