Ask yourself what you like to do and where are places where you can do that. There is that pesky job thing you need in order to eat and put a roof over your head. Some parts of the country are more religious than others notably Utah and the South/Southeast, so there is that. Guy my wife grew up with left town in 1982, was a big partier and pothead, moved to Virginia after he finished plumbing school and found religion, now he owns a very successful plumbing company. Says it never would have happened had he stayed at home smoking weed with his buds. Told me that once he cleared his head he found out he was a pretty smart guy.
You're 20, you have lots of time. Again, the main thing is to have a marketable skill so you can find a decent job. There are a lot of jobs available if you're willing to work hard, show up every day, and pass a drug test, but not all of them will pay much. Sometimes weird and goofy stuff that no one thinks of. My wife is an accountant for an admittedly large fire extinguisher company and tells me that the guys who just run around to install, replace, and recharge fire extinguishers make a decent buck. Every public building has to have fire extinguishers.
I am in the middle of doing what I should have done in 1983, which is leaving this declining area and moving to FL. I was laid up for five months in 2012 in my living room, IV's, home care nurses, all that, which gave me a lot of time to think. I own my own business, which doesn't pay very much and I hate it, but I started surfing the internet with my one hand that worked looking for other careers suitable to my skill set and came up with funeral director. So at the age of 53 I went back to school part-time and finished a couple months ago. Again, weird and goofy stuff that is in demand and I can pretty much live wherever I want and find a job. If you're a gearhead it's the same for mechanics and transmission guys.
