I have a 2001 Ranger Edge 4.0. My axle code
is 97 which I believe means I have an open differential. Is it possible to convert it to a limited slip? I have a "pick and pull" junkyard that has a bunch of Rangers. I was hoping to be able
to find a rear end that will fit that has l/s. I have a nicer truck with a locker but want to at least upgrade my Ranger to limited slip. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Finding an axle to swap is the easiest way to install an LSD. Just ask for one with the same gearing ratio yo have now unless you are looking to change the gear ratio as well. If you can find one out of and FX4, even better. Bigger axle tubes, bearings, and 31 spline as opposed to 28 splined axles. If you can find one with a Torsen T2, even better. Those are geared systems as opposed to most others having clutch plates and needing a additive added to the gear lube for them to operate properly.

Check this out:

Looks like you have 4.10's... very desirable but not a very common ratio.

I’d recommend it, check out that axel code list to quickly identify which axel you are looking at. Try and find those FXII axels, they came with the factory Torsen style L/S. I just finished swapping a bigger 4.10 Torsen rear axel into my ‘93. Pretty nice upgrade.

Thanks to all for the info. I will see what I can find at the pick n pull. I will post some before and after pics. My next step will probably be a lift or maybe an add a leaf and torsion bar crank and bigger tires. I don't plan on doing any major off roading. Just some weekend warrior stuff here and there. Thanks again.
