I have a 2001 Ranger 2.5. RWD manual 5 spd I love it and have 300,000 miles on it. I just picked up a wrecked 2002 Ranger 4.0 4x4 auto. I want to just swap out the engine. Can I use the wring harness from the donor truck and the ECM. I know I will need to buy a flywheel of the 4.0. I am hope the bell housing on my trans bolts up to a 4.0.

Any insight you could give me would be helpful.

4.0 motor will NOT bolt up to that 2.5 trans. You're gonna need the Trans AND Motor from that donor. Also wiring harness and a ton of other stuff. IF you can have the donor on site, your swap will go much easier. Ford transmissions do NOT have a swappable bell housings. Transmissions are motor specific. The ONLY one's that are compatible are the 2.9 ( NOT 2.8 ) and 4.0.

2.8 uses same bell as a 2.9

That is what I am afraid of. I could have bought one with a manual but it was 1000 miles away. This one is only 150 miles and has an automatic. I flat tow the truck, so I need to have a manual. I guess I will be hunting for a manual transmission for a 4.0. The d.onor is a 4x4 so I will part it out and get my money back. From what i read the ECM should work from the auto on a manual trans. I dont like that high idle down they have on the manual trans CPU.

Youre not supposed to flat tow a manual either unless you unhook the driveshaft
