I have a Dead 90 2.9L Ranger auto that I am not sure if I should repair or replace with another 2.9L or if I should do a 4.0L. I went to a large number of wreaker looking for a good 2.9L there responce was there was there is no such thing as a good 2.9L and I should go with a 4.0L. I can but a 2.9L but they will not warrenty itbut they would warrenty a 4.0L. I also should swap out my Tranny due to a 2nd gear band issue. So I have found some options around town but I do not know what to go with eather a 87 Bronco2 2.9L 5 speed w/ 250000km ($500) on it or a 93 4.0L Auto Explorer ($1000). So my questions are, What is easier swapping a 4L in and swapping the wiring or swapping in the 2.9L and swapping in the Cluch and what not for the 5 speed (if the 87 stuff bolts up to the 90 stuff?)? as well Is the reliability of the 4.)that much better then the 2.9L? If you could please keep power out of the thread, I know the tq and hp differences as well as the economy. I Just want the most reliable truck I can have with these options

If anyone is suprised that I recommend you go with the 4.0 tryto contain yourselves.

I swapped a '93 4.0 into my '87. In terms of difficulty swapping
a '93 4.0 into a '90 is MUCH easier, but will still have some electrical/electronic complications

I'd go with the '93 engine but to make the swap go more smoothly
I'd also seek a 90-92 4.0 RANGER engine bay harness
a '90-92 (on engine) engine harness and a set of '90 injectors.

If you get those specific parts the 4.0 swap is practically
a "plug it in and start it up" process on an '89-92 Ranger or Bronco2

Don't simply rebuild your current automatic the 4.0 auto uses a differnet torque converter and is "programmed" for different shift point RPM's.

The 4.0 does more by 2000rpm than a 2.9 CAN do and considering the differences and the level of improvement there is only one other potential swap for the difficulty that can be done on a Ranger based vehicle and that's swapping a 2.3Turbo in place of a 2.3

thank you for the reply I have decided to go with the 2.9L due to the simple swap. I have decided to leave my tranny in the truck for thim being so I can get it back on the road quick
