swapping 2.9 l wiyh 4cyl.

i just picked up a 4cyl. with a five speed to swap with my 2.9l with automatic 4x4 now the 4cyl is out of a two wheel drive and its a 94 and mine is a 4x4 automatic will i have a problem hooking up transfer case to five speed and whats needed to make that swap thanks'and sorry the 4x4 is an 86

2.3 and 2.9 do have different bell housing patterns...

The bellhousings are different and the only way to convert a 4x2 trans to a 4x4 is a full tear down. The parts don’t swap between auto to manual transmissions.

You cannot attach the transfer case to the 2wd trans without some major parts swapping. I've never done it but from what I understand is you need 2 transmissions, and one of them has to be a 4x4 trans.

Yup... impossible. You need to go buy a 4x4 transmission. The automatic wont bolt to the 4 cylinder engine, and the transfer case wont bolt to the manual transmission. No combination of the parts you have will work.

His 2wd trans is out of a '94, I think those came with m5od-r1 trans so needs a 4x4 m5od-r1 for parts.

I think his truck is an 86 2.9l/auto 4x4. He wants to swap in a 94 2.3l/manual. The manual is 2wd and he wants to know how to make it 4x4.
