I just replaced the headliner in my '92 and need to address the sunvisors. Has anyone tried recovering them? Any notes or pictures on how?

look at page 51 in the LMC truck catalog. where did you get a new headliner? I have needed one of those for years.

Headliner

I've seen those, but really want to recover the originals to match my new fabric.

I recovered the original, twice, lol. The fiberglass insulation type material they used degrades over the years, but I was able to salvage it. I used contact cement on the back with thin strips of cardboard to add strength in a couple weak spots, then carefully peeled the old headliner material off using gentle persuasion and the dull side of a gasket scraper. Looked good, but when I cut the holes for the visor mounts, I didn't notice some backer material had broken away so I cut the holes too big. Had to pull the new fabric back out and try again. Used a couple cans of cheap brake cleaner (acetone) to release the new headliner glue.. Should have tried that with the original liner. I got the liner material and glue at JoAnn fabrics. With a common 50% coupon, it cost me less than $20 per try. The liner is usually $15/yd and the glue is $20/can. I had them cut 1.5 yards and had a foot or so left over. Hardest parts are peeling the old material without leaving huge gouges in the board and getting the new fabric into the space where the visors are set into the headliner in the center. The image below was my first attempt. The second came out better.

the fabric on mine was sagging and worn like yours so I peeled it off and glued some new fabric on but it started sagging again. (probably put on too tightly and not enough glue) so I took it out and just left the metal roof.

you could probably cut all the stitches out on the sunvisors and pull the old fabric off and then find someone with a heavy duty sewing machine to put the new fabric on, or get good at hand sewing. I don't know what the inside is made out of though.
they have new ones on ebay that say airbag warning... and these trucks don't have airbags so it would look funny. I agree that original is better.

I got lucky at the junkyard one day and found seats and visors from a 93 or 94 Explorer...the tracks fit my truck perfectly (88 extended cab) and the visors were exactly the same with the exception of having a place to clip them in and stop them from shaking all over the place...

I fixed that by adding the clips from the Explorer to my Ranger with a slight modification in how they secured the visors...

Worked out well and only looked slightly out of place...lol

I did a writeup on this years ago...it is in the Tech Articles...and the links still work...:)
