Well, from wheeling the exploder, I managed to strip one of the bolts on the front of the Dana 35, presumable from bashing it on a rock. I know of a few others that have done this before, and used various fixes. I'm sure this is a fairly common issue so, so what would be the best way to take care of it?

Right now, i'm thinking to either:
- Drill and tap them bigger and run new bolts in them all
- Find a Heli-Coil and use that for the stripped ones (leads on sizes/kits?)

As it stands now, I tightened up the rest and it's not leaking but I feel like this will cause me a headache down the road.

Thanks
-Kyle

The heli-coil is the best option. I'd drop the diff and do them all while I was at it.

Would either of you have specifications of a heli coil that would work for this application off hand?

I believe it's M10 - 1.5.

Yes, do ALL of them. Best thing you can do. :icon_thumby:

Also, throw a skidplate on it too if you run in rocks a lot. Repeated bashing does slowly distort the cover (beam) slightly which can cause it to seep oil.

Thank you very much. I will do some digging with McMaster Carr or something to find some heli coils and I will replace ALL of them.

I will also have to look into a skid plate of sorts because I do like the rocks. :icon_twisted:

So many styles on McMaster Carr to choose from - any suggestions on regular style vs locking?

go to Napa, they have an assortment of the standard coil type in a packet with the tap and install tool and everything, not cheap, but will get you what you need

I will have to check into that. I figured it wouldn't be a terribly cheap fix, but it's needed regardless and probably the easiest/safest bet for future use.

it's not that bad, probably $20 for 5 inserts and the tap and stuff, then a few bucks more for more inserts...

CopyKat
5/16 UNC

I did all of mine and have not had any leak issues.

Both of you know your stuff. Which is it?

Factory is an M10-1.5.

Sorry it was 7/16-14(UNC) it is Blonde one larger than the M10. The 4.10 Diff I installed had the lower 5 bolt threads stripped from a gorilla over torqueing the bolts. I needed longer thread for my beams, so I re-tapped all 10 of the mounting threads 7/16-14. I was able to torque them to the recomended 35 Ft.lbs.

thanks. I was looking for the helicoil kit at ACE. I found it to work in the M10 1.5 but the clerk insisted it was a standard size.
